Looking for things to do out and about (self.Blind)
submitted by wifeypoopoo
I’m taking care of my visually impaired relative a few days a week. I want to be able to take her out to do things but everything I can think of is more visual. Any ideas?

Edit: She is 26 but has developmental issues. So mentally she is around 8. And it is very cold where we are right now. Usually we go and do things outside. But we are cooped up because of the weather.

the main thing is what they like to do, not that they are blind. Some stuff cannot be made accessible, like driving, but the vast majority of stuff can. Assuming they are a competent adult just ask them.

Walking trails. Sitting on a park bench. See a movie. Go to a not too busy place to eat. Have a picnic. Ride a ferry. Go fishing. Go for a drive in a hilly area. Historical museums are fun.

If you are there to be their eyes you can do just about anything you could do with a blind person. Petting zoo. Religious service. Tie one on at a bar. Go to a quiz night at a bar. Go to an animal shelter where they let you cuddle with animals. Volunteer to help at a soup kitchen. Walk a beach. Find a county fair and pet the animals. Karaoke bar. Look for events in your area put on by parks or clubs. My wife said Facebook events is filled with stuff.

One of my best friends was legally blind. Nothing stopped him from living life. The world is your friend's to experience. Enjoy and best wishes.

Lots of museums have more auditory (stations to plug in headphones to listen) or tactile components nowadays, often in the "kids" section but not always.

Going to markets with fabric, trinkets, especially food from different cultures can be exciting to enjoy through touch, smell, and taste. Restaurants/bars or fairs where they have live musicians. That could be fun to enjoy music if a concert venue seems overwhelming.

Does she have any ideas of her own? How old is she? Take her to a bar for a couple of beers or to McDonalds for a milkshake. Then go watch a movie, there are audio description headphones.

She is 26 but has developmental issues. So mentally she’s around 8-10. She also has a very restricted diet.

Find a children's museum. They have a lot to offer. Help her explore different stations throughout the museum. These are called children museum's but anyone can go enjoy the exhibits.

Is she religious. Go to church together?

Does she like live music, sometimes there’s musicians by the beach, on the streets, at a park, by the lake, etc. go hang out and listen. I found a group by the beach here which sings gospel music and have joined them and have suggested about 15 songs to sing. I suggested one they fell so deeply in love with it that’s now it’s a regular. Haha! I am bringing the food this sunday spent about $200 on 25 of them but sometimes that’s what you have to do when part of a community.

How about some cooking? Look for the recipe for how to make cake in a cup using the microwave.

Sorry, I reread your comment again, and the cake might not work, but she could probably help or learn how to prepare her meals.
