I live in an area with a lot of snow, and a lot of snow dropped on Monday. The city **still** hasn't gotten every sidewalk plowed yet. Trying to walk along the packed snow is a nightmare! Not to mention, with everything white and no contrast, it is so hard to figure out where I am sometimes. It's just white everywhere.

It's not much fun even when you don't have any sight at all. It basically completely defeats how a cane is supposed to work, and turns everything into an obstacle. I am lucky in that I live in a place with very little snow, a bit once every few years perhaps, but I couldn't agree more that it is hateful.

..... I live in Canada where snow is present for 6 months out of the year, so when somebody had a brilliant idea to make the garbage trucks white. Well I walked into one because my ability to see differences in contrast is non-existent. I am still nursing the goose egg.

*nods vigorously in Wisconsin*
Not many people shovel the sidewalks here, so I end up walking in the road. It's a small town so I haven't been hit yet but man oh man I have no depth perception it's so hard some days. Everything is flat and white and ahh.

I use the red part at the bottom of my cane to help me gauge how deep the snow is. For most of the week, when I stick my cane into the snow, the entire red part disappears.
It's also doesn't help it's been about -25 (in celcius), so hands are freezing!

Yeah it's been pretty bitter here too. I fortunately am getting a ride am/pm on work days and the rest of the time I try to stay inside because this is ridiculous cold. The cane is a good measurement!

Plus white canes -- I think in winter they should be some other color. Or maybe covered with CAUTION I'M BLIND, YOU IDIOT!

Great, now I’m going to go get a bright fluorescent orange tape and write that. Then wrap it around my cane and cane handle. My God. Snow sucks.

Add some snowshoes decorated similarly.

Same here. Snow defeats canes, and when sidewalks aren't cleared, it forces me into the road. That's not bad, until I have to walk a route that has to include a stretch of busy road. The snow also narrows the road, making it more dangerous. Even if sidewalks are cleared, there's no rule against people pushing snow from their driveways into the sidewalks. Not only is that annoying to get past, but it can also throw off my orientation. Snow also covers up my terrain-based landmarks.
Using a dog helps some of this, but not that much. Busy roads are still impossible, and snowbanks blocking sidewalks are still a pain. They're an obstacle, so the dog stops, but I have no cane to gague how large the bank is. We have to just plow ahead and hope for the best.
I like cold, and don't mind shoveling snow, but I truly hate how hard it makes getting around.

I live in the Pacific Northwest and we don’t get a lot of snow fortunately, but I totally feel you! My cane is basically useless, as is what little vision I have, because as you said, everything is just white. Usually I can at least get a general sense of where the sidewalk meets the street, or a strip of grass or whatever, but no such ability in the snow

It just snowed up here in Colorado a couple of days ago and it was really bad. Would you like me to list out all the different things I ran into?
TechnicalPragmatist1 points1y ago
I heard it is bad. Fortunately I live in a place where I have never really seen snow. What is that? Anyway. Hahaha! It would almost be cool to see snow but I heard traveling in it is a pain.

Hi, same. I am in Canada right now. I love snow, it's beautiful but where I come from it's mostly unheard of, so I wasn't ready for the brightness of it all during the day. The sun reflects on it and it's just blinding me more. I still enjoy it from the inside of my husband's home though. Going outside is scary and when we went to the falls, I had a literal panic attack because I lost the last bit of autonomy I had while trying to step on the snow without falling or bumping into things. Luckily husband and his family were here.
