Does NVDA support word highlighting? (self.Blind)

I have been playing around with the settings, but could not find a way to highlight the words as they are being read. Is there a setting that enables this?

No. NVDA is primarily a screen reader - not a visual aid.
The visual highlighting will show the system focus but I don't think is granulaar enough to do word - but being blind I can't confirm that.
Turn on the stuff in NVDA preferences visual, then do a say all and see how it looks.
