I got approved for disability! (self.Blind)
submitted by Bubbly-Duck3232
So, I started the process for disability in May 2021. After several rescheduled doctors appointments and lots of calling back and forth; I got my approval letter today. I was fully expecting to be denied the first time around…I am so relieved.

To those who are still applying, don’t get discouraged!!

I am employed as a software engineer but I’ve often wondered about the prospect of SSDI, either if I lose all of my vision and just find it too difficult to continue doing what I’m doing or I just want to scale back work a bit and maybe do something part time along with disability income. It’s hard for me to figure out exactly how much we get and whether or not it’s a livable amount

You make at least 10x the amount you'd get on SSDI if you continue working. Definitely not enough to make rent payments where I live.

I was looking into it last year, and I am still trying to get it with the help of CBest which literally ghosted me along with every social worker who was helping me apply, including my most recent outreach one who has been MIA since October. Now my DMH worker is trying to figure it out (Just got a hold of her for the first time in months even though she's supposed to do a weekly check-in EVERY Friday.) and just told me that my case might be closed due to "lack of contact" even though the CBest person I was supposed to meet with wouldn't give me her number and never showed up to the meeting she scheduled.

Sadly that’s what I suspected. I knew I wouldn’t come anywhere close to the salary I’m earning now in my field, but I was just thinking about figuring out how much you can still earn and qualify for SSDI so maybe sometime down the road, like years from now, I could jump out of the rat race and have a more relaxed life.

In all honesty, I didn’t want to apply at first. But, since I’m having issues with finding a job on a bus line, it was the best route. It’ll give me time to go back to school, and refine my cooking skills.
