Before my vision and health issues took a turn for the worse, I was a retail supervisor/manager for about 15 years. I do not recommend it as a career.

Our family owned a PC repair shop that also did some retail. I worked there 2 days a week for 5 years. I was also doing some remote consulting work (the bulk of my work), which is why I was only there part-time.

I’ve never done any in-person retail or customer service jobs. I don’t think I’ve ever had quite enough vision to do that effectively, dealing with cash, inaccessible cash registers/point-of-sale machines etc. I did work for about 12 years in a call center though, both on the phones and in various leadership roles

I had a lighted magnifier down by the cash drawer so I could use it to look at money/things people were handing me if I needed to. The rest, it's surprising how quickly you can commit a lot of that to muscle memory.

You also need surprisingly little vision to swap out parts in a PC once you get the hang of it. I built/repaired several.

At one point, I did get tired of our point of sale software being difficult for me to see and use, so I wrote an app to replace it one weekend. This was years ago so our credit card terminal didn't interface with our point of sale software directly, so it was pretty easy to replace the basic inventory/POS system.

I guess that's one of the benefits of being the owner. I could do whatever I needed to make it work and no one complained.

None is those jobs even workable for the totally blind? I don’t think it is unless you specifically do the bep program for vocational rehabilitation. I thought about it at 16 years old but didn’t end up doing it or following through I went to a store to ask but that’s about it, didn’t even go back to find out the answer which was probably no.
