Are we secretly exempt from jury duty?(self.Blind)

To just get this out there. Got RP. Allot if peripheral is gone but central is.. decent. Back on topic tho. I haven't been summoned once to jury duty. I'm on disability. Am I secretly exempt from jury duty? I grew up in a family that considered it a honor. Kinda feel left out in the cold if that makes sense?

I’ve been summoned and had to go, but never chosen. First question in a mal practice case the lawyers ask is if you have ever be operated on. They don’t want a biased juror and I’ve had brain surgery

I've been summoned multiple times, but my excuse is my blindness, so I never have to go.

When I got summoned, I found a box on the form to exempt myself. I don’t remember the wording, but I think it was something about not being fit because of a medical condition. I don’t know if I’d be a good juror because of requirements to see evidence presented. I’m in Canada, though, so jury duty might work differently here.
I’d say, if you want to do it, go ahead and try. The worse they can do is send you home. And maybe it doesn’t actually require as much sight as I assume.

Are you a registered voter? If not, that might be why you're not being called.
PaleontologistTrue74 [OP]1 points1y ago
Yup I am. I'm only 24 tho so maybe it's a age thing too? Idk how this system works tbh.
I'm just gana go with not being pretty enough.

No, I've been called several times and served once or twice. In my city, they pull from registered voters. I think if you serve on a jury you are exempt for two years but if you aren't you are exempt for or year. I always enjoyed being called for the people watching.

Nope. Just the luck of the draw.

Makes sense. Depending on the person I'm either the luckiest or the saddest person.

I just did my 2nd day of Voir Dire, and the judge put me in the potential jury poll. I'm not totally blind, my acuity is close to 20/20, but I have Homogeneous Hemianopsia. Which I disclosed to the judge and lawyers along with my dyslexia.

I told them I was blind, submitted doctors notes and the forum to get exempt and I am exempt for life pretty much, never summoned since, was summoned for a while yearly or something. But never chosen. Or had to show up to the courthouse.
Not sure if it’s a secret though.

I got a summons once. I told them I was blind. I've not gotten one since.

I've been summoned many times & enclose a letter noting my impairment. It often results in being excused prior to duty.

In the USA blind people have the right to serve on juries.
I have been summoned multiple times. Where I live they pull from the voter registration polls.

At least in Canada I have gotten summoned only once. I agree though it is a very important civic duty.

I was unlucky enough to be summoned for jury duty right after I turned 18. I submitted a letter saying I am legally blind and am now permanently medically exempt from regular jury duty.
Unfortunately, I seem to have the worst luck ever and got summoned for GRAND jury duty the year after that. Turns out the exemption doesn't automatically apply to all forms of jury duty lol. So I had to submit a letter saying that I'm legally blind AGAIN. The justification I gave was obvious – there's no way I would be able to see any evidence!

You’ve probably just been lucky this whole time. :) I also have RP and have been summoned several times. Of the times I’ve reported to the courtroom, I only ended up serving on one trial. Ever since then though, I’ve never received a summons, so maybe once they saw me in person and realized I was blind that secretive exemption thing kicked in. LOL
