Health/disability insurance question for 20-30 year old with a visual impairment (self.Blind)
submitted by petite4eyes
What type of insurance coverage (in the United States) has been most helpful to others in young adulthood with vision impairments. Bonus points if you have experience with retinal dystrophies.

Edit: added country

I had Medicare Parts A & B and Medicaid when I was on disability/making a lot less money years ago. It was great coverage, but sometimes I'd be limited on my options, because they would only pay for certain things. For example, I had to get a specific type of lens implant when I had cataract surgery if I didn't want to pay for it myself, or if I was in the hospital, it wouldn't cover a private room. Every insurance provider has quirks like that, though.

I have a platinum plus plan through BCBS now that's pretty great, with Guardian for vision (and dental), which is slightly less great. Most of my eye-related things aside from glasses are covered under BCBS though, so it's fine. BCBS has better LGBTQ+ health care coverage than Medicaid does in a lot of states, if that's a concern. Both cover ocular prosthetics.

Medicare/Medicaid was great when i was still on SSDI and single.

Was Medicaid your secondary or primary insurance? Was it managed through a managed care org?

It was secondary, covering anything Medicare didn’t cover. Not sure. It was a state run program.
