Table of 100 features comparing popular text to speech apps (self.Blind)
submitted by ivanicin
Hello, this post is largely inspired by the feedback from $1 on Android and iOS.

In that thread I was asked multiple times regarding why it is better than some competing app, mostly Voice Dream Reader. Such questions are hard to answer as it is really personal on how you use those apps and what matters to you. And frequently it is not about one big feature but about many small features that make your favorite big feature better.

I've spent some time to collect information regarding the almost 100 features available in those apps and split those into several segments. Basic features that are expected and available in all apps are not included. The first version of the document was more visual so that one can quickly compare '+' signs and empty space. Now I have made a new version that should be more accessible for visually impaired users as all features are marked with "Yes" and "No".

If you have some suggestions on how to make this comparison better or more accessible or regarding some missing feature in the list, I'll be happy to update the document.

Finally here is the link: $1

UPDATE: unfortunately this text was discarded in the redesign of the web site so now there is only regular version saved: $1

Hopefully it will help some people to find what is the best text to speech app for them.

Unfortunately in the meantime the web site became corrupted and some content was lost including that page. The only good thing is that the other version of the page still exists: $1

I recently switched from android to iPhone and I love the speech central app. It took a while for me to find it but I’m so happy I did as it does almost everything the app I used on android did.

The one thing that’s missing is when it’s used while driving and spoken directions are played from google maps, the old app I used would pause the audio (or even replay the last 5 seconds) during the interruption.
I think this is missing from your list of features in the comparison as well, and should probably be pretty easy to implement.

The app performs this on iPhone too. However that feature is dependent on the other (navigation) app. If it doesn't signal to other apps that they need to interrupt the audio nothing will happen.

But if you receive a phone call you can see that the app pauses the reproduction and continues after you end the phone call. That is the same feature just implemented well in the other app that signals the interruption.
