Would it be insensitive to cosplay a blind character? (self.Blind)
submitted by supportraccoon
So sorry if this seems rude, but I want to cosplay as Matt Murdock for Comic Con this year, and with him being blind and using a cane, I don't know if its insensitive or not, and its been on my mind a while. Would it be wrong for me, as a seeing person to cosplay him?

This should really be on the FAQ. I think this sub gets this question like every month at least. You can go $1 to the search bar and look for daredevil (or matt murdock, or cosplay etc) but the usual answer is "its fine, use a prop cane, don't pretend to be blind"

Also why is it ALWAYS Matt? Why don't we ever get people asking about Geordi, or Toph, or Chirrut Îmwe, or Kenshi, or Blind Mag, or Shakaste, or Mama Odie?

Are you one with the Force? Is the Force with you?

Love that line honestly. But I’m actually building it for a costuming and charity group i’m a member of. The 501st Legion.

I have many friends in the 501st. I was a Cantina regular at $1 for years.

To be fair, he's a really popular character with his own movie, tv show, and now he's been introduced into the MCU. The others just don't have as large followings.

While both Toph and Matt can experience the world almost as if they have sight Matt typically tries to play blind while Toph doesn’t. She has a big following, but her blindness isn’t as relevant when cosplaying, I guess, or it’s more fantastical so people don’t really link it with the real world as closely

I've sent some dedicated cosplayers put the grey contacts in while playing Toph so they have the same "look" that she does in the show.

That said, I think Toph can basically "see" with her blindsight, so I think there's less apprehension about playing her. Her identity is more about she DOES see, than how she doesn't.

Matt Murdoch's whole identity is he doesn't see.

I don't know honestly-

I recently got back into the MCU fandom recently so thats my reasoning.

Cosplaying a fave character who’s blind, awesome. However, please don’t use a real cane. Get something that looks like a prop, maybe modeled off the cane he Carrie’s in the comics. I’ve had a couple people at con’s think my cane was a prop. Happily, that was cleared up really quickly, but if people using real canes as props becomes a trend, it could cause difficulty for blind folks like me who’re just trying to enjoy a con.

I've seen a few people use a wooden dowel painted, another pointer that could help is in a lot of the comics his came has a he's hand grip instead of black, converging you could think about for a later opinion, I know this is an old post but it may be helpful
TwoSunsRise 5 points 1y ago
Nope! He's a beloved character in the marvel universe. Just because he's blind doesn't mean he's exclusive to the blind community. Of course, I speak for myself only.

I get mad every time I see a Matt Murdock cosplayer. But then again, I can't see, so....

Just kidding. You picked an awesome character, go for it.

Thank you!

Go for it.

In theory is it that Matt Murdock is the most cost efficient cosplay? A guy can wear the same thing he wears to the office, he just needs to buy sunglasses and a cane. That is why they don’t dress up as Daredevil. To do that you need the devil suit. But who goes to con dresses as Clark Kent or Peter Parker? Going as superhero without their hero costume is seldom done, because they look like normal people.

I’ll let everyone draw their own conclusions about what cosplayers who would go as Matt but not Petter.

No, do what you want 🙂

I had no intent on actually using a cane if I was going to use one at all, just hold it and walk with it but he does use both glasses and a cane, the glasses being a defining thing. I was wondering if it'd be rude to use a cane, but if I end up doing so (if its respectful) I'd end up donating it.

Thank you so much honestly this has helped a lot.

I think Matt is a bit problematic- he’s a blind guy in a suit. Though I’d have no problem with a daredevil costume or any of the other distinctive characters mentioned in other replies.

Obviously it is just me but I think dressing up as generic blind person doesn’t come across well
maintain_improvement -10 points 1y ago
It would not go over well.

I've gone to cons where there was sighted Matt Murdock cosplayers, so I'm gonna have to disagree with you there.
