What are some of the good/bad stereotypes of being Blind? (self.Blind)
submitted by SeeSawPodcast
Hey Everyone!

I'm looking to spotlight some of the good and bad stereotypes that surround the blind community. I've experienced a fair few, some that are hurtful and some that do have a little truth behind them unfortunately.

What are some that you have experienced? Really curious about different countires and cultures outside my own!

From what I've noticed, people assume a lot of my clients have good hearing (people have the erroneous belief people's other senses automatically get better when someone loses their vision). It doesn't occur to them that many older people could have both hearing and vision loss (or medical conditions that cause both).

* We have Superhuman abilities
* We have no abilities
* we don’t judge others because we can’t see
* we know every blind person around

That we count steps

Just because some of us are totally blind we need a guardian to be with us all the time.

It’s amazing to be independent and walk down the street.

That we can’t use a computer or smart phone.

That we can’t ever live independently.

That we can’t travel to another state by ourselves or go on trips on our own and then do it well on that trip.

That we should sit down or be by a wall or else we will fall. The really bad one I’ve heard is that oh blind people fall off of ledges a lot or bang their heads on open doors.

This is not said but more felt. We’re cute, submissive, don’t have a personality and to be patronized.

If you know one blind guy you know them all.

We must all know each other. Worse we must all like each other too and get along.
