I really don’t like it when people accuse me of somehow being able to see when I do things like dress in color co-ordinated clothing, dye my hair or get my nails done(self.Blind)
submitted by CaramelToffee12
So I had my hair dyed and got braids in today. I had a friend say, You can’t even see the color that your hair is, are you sure you can’t actually see a little? If you can’t see why do you waste your money?
What if I just like fashion? Just because I’m blind doesn’t mean I have to live in random colored clothes that don’t match 😅 I’m not an angry person and I always try to be nice when sighted people have questions but this has always annoyed me.

"I'm blind, not invisible. OTHERS can see me. When your allergies are really bad do you stop caring about how you smell just because you can't smell yourself?"

Exactly

If you don’t already know about her you might like Molly Burke. She is a blind YouTuber that posts various content but that exact issue she talks about a good bit! She frequently dyes her hair and is very into fashion so of course lots of trolls have questioned her authenticity.

She once got screwed (figuratively speaking) by some big shot hair stylist who gave her a terrible cut and hideous orange hair. He was totally taking advantage of her blindness to do whatever he wanted, and it wasn't even done well.
That should have been all the proof trolls needed to know that she's really blind.

That is so upsetting.

Oh that’s horrible. She seems like such a sweet girl! I hate that so much. This is a worry for me when I get my hair done. I have very thick hair that I get put into protective braids and whenever I get it dyed or braided I always have that fear that something went wrong and she just didn’t tell me. So frustrating!

I don’t know her, I’ll look her up right now, thank you!

I don’t understand why people think VI or blind people should walk around looking like slobs. There is nothing wrong with anyone wanting to look nice!

I so agree

"are you sure you can’t actually see a little?"
'a friend'
Does not compute. I mean, I get asking why, like maybe 'I didn't realise you were so into fashion and stuff, how did you get into it/what do you like about it when you can't see it?' But to full on accuse you of faking your disability...that's just awful. I'm sorry.

It did upset me a lot. It feels like they are saying that I am not trustworthy as a person as a whole and it makes me feel horrible about myself
Also this isnt related and I hope you don't mind me asking, but I noticed that after I was scrolling down and my screen read your name, it read your name and then said retinitis pigmentosa. I also have RP so is there some way to add in your condition to your name? Or have I just misread it 😅

That’s the flaire.

I get this constantly because I try to look decent. I probably try harder than I would if I could see fine. In absolute expectation of being downvoted to oblivion, I have much frustration when people who can't see what they look like tend to slouch around in sweatpants all the time and then complain nobody will hire them.
It's a solvable problem and something that most people can sort out with a tiny bit of effort.
TechnicalPragmatist1 points1y ago
That definitely doesn’t sound good.

I don't get why people assume things constantly. There are many issues, health or otherwise, that I'm not aware of. There are many people dealing with something the general population has no idea about. Why assume and be confrontational to someone's situation? They can easily ask you "hey dude how do you get the colors coordinated?"
