Hello, I have a question for any blind artists! (self.Blind)
submitted by Feast_On_The_Bones
If anyone out there happens to be a blind artist I'm very curious about two things.
1. For someone who is blind from birth: If they were described an animal to draw, what would it look like?
2. For someone who was not born blind: If they were described an animal they had never seen before what would it look like drawn?

I hope this doesn't sound rude or insensitive, I'm really just very curious and fascinated by the idea.

No offense at all, I love it when folks take a genuine interest!

1. I was not born blind, but I became blind in both eyes over the course of 25 years via retinal dystrophy. I am lucky I got to see all I was able to see, when I was able. I sure miss it.

2. I would not know what it would look like - I paint with a very specific method I came up with. But - if you were to describe something to me and I were to paint it - it would be up to your interpretation as to what it would look like. I am blind full central vision in both eyes and low vision in my peripherals in both eyes.

I more or less, "feel", the space I need to work within and then, "feel", what I am painting. Funny thing is, I cannot draw or write legibly by hand anymore. It is always about vivid imagination.

That's really fascinating! I have often tried to draw without light or even with my eyes closed but never really made much. Drawing is difficult without applying a lot of pressure. However, I find sculpting to be really fun in the dark because I can feel it!
The way you describe "feeling" what you paint makes me think of that. Thank you so much for sharing!

I would draw it by how it feels if I can get a stuffed animal version or something like that.

If I had no tactile reference I wouldn’t know how to draw it unless it was described really well and at that point I may hesitate.

I fall probably in to the first category. I became totally blind at about 8 but couldn’t see much to begin with.a very tiny bit and not very well at all and probably had 0 depth perception, I couldn’t even read.

Thanks so much for sharing! I had not thought about touching an object when I asked this question.
Would a stuffed animal or sculpture work better for you? Are forms that are soft easier to work with or something a bit more rigid?

Both are fine, the most important is an accurate portrayal of it. That’s really the important part of it.
