I just wanted to rant about drivers (self.Blind)
submitted by arsen_gevorgyan
So I have an O&M lesson once a week (provided by my school district). During the lessons, we usually cross big streets that have trafic lights. And so while I'm waiting for the nearside paralel surge, 2 things commonly happen.
1. The driver who has to "do the surge" is textin or facetimin while they're driving, and their lack of attension to the road makes them either just wait there while it's their time to go, or make a wrong turn at a wrong time. Like bruh put ya phone down and drive ya fuckin car, a totally blind someone might be crossing the street any time.
2. The driver sees that there's a person with a cane, and they try to "help". I understand that you are just tryin to help by stoppin yo car, but instead you're just givin me some confusion and making things "worse". A doubled version of this happened when I was doing my lesson though with another blind classmate a week or 2 ago.
Did yall have similar experiences?

My rant today: Amazon Prime driver in the crosswalk. I hit his truck with my cane. He asked why. I said because you are parked in the crosswalk. He said, “just go around it.” I hit again with the cane, @this is how find my way around it.” “Your blind?”

So I’m not totally blind, but I don’t feel guilty letting them think I am.

Just wished I answered, “No, I’m just middle aged woman trying to pull off a Matt Murdock/Daredevil cosplay. What do you think?”

I didn't even really register that a lot of people ask me that question until you mentioned it. If you don't mind I will file your response under W for Witticism in my brain for when some asshat needs telling off in the future.

Best advice I got for O&M as a kid was to walk with intention. I can still hear my teacher “you look indecisive and the drivers are picking up on that”. Now I walk like I own the roads and cars tend to be much better as a result. Also helps keep pedestrians more in check instead of them expecting me to move out of their way they will move for me.

Yup. In my town they like to honk at me to go and try to wave me on when I don't have a walk sign and the traffic in the other direction is still actively going through the crosswalk I'm waiting on.

This startles me, triggering my ptsd. It risks putting me in sensory overload from the loud noise from my autism. It also risks distracting my service dog.

And it's also clearly not safe to walk! But they're DEFINITELY doing it to me, they aren't honking at anyone else.

My latest way of handling this is to pointedly keep staring toward the walk sign (probably not actually looking perfectly at it but whatever) and push the walk button again, refusing to look at or otherwise acknowledge the honker.

Damn, shit's even worse when a mental health problem is added onto it
Bsmith0799 2 points 1y ago
Yep. Not sure why exactly they like to do this in my town but I hate it.

It's horrible in a college town especially! You see all these college students looking at their phones just stepping out into traffic which in turn creates aggressive drivers. In my town if you were blind your chances of getting ran over by a soccer mom is extremely high only for them to risk everyone's life to save 30 seconds which is absolutely disrespectful and ridiculous. Especially when it takes them 5 minutes to get to where they need to go and it takes me and my family 2 hours to get 15 minutes down the road because of public transportation

Crossing is worse when mr. Punk decides it’s really fashionable to oh yeah, blaire blair blaire their music. No you’re not cool.

Also when people. are to busy on their phones and start to move their car when you’re crossing. They’ve ran in to my cane once or twice like this happy it was not me.

I feel ya. Was about to get hit one time cause the driving lady couldn't leave her fuckin celphone for a second

A good sighted friend of mine told me he was trying to cross the street he was sighted and this car just flew down the street, maybe on their cellphone, but obviously not seeing the stoplight in the middle of the block or the guy crossing the street. He was really close to being ran over. And then the car stopped a few hundred yards down. But yeah, people can be interesting. Ive had a close miss like that myself. Sometimes it’s even dangerous for blind people. Definitely not every day but it could happen for sure.

Almost got hit by a van that made an illegal turn as I was about to step off a curb. I hit the thing with my cane for good measure.
