Help with speech resume using voiceover on Mac (self.Blind)
submitted by Callouscals81
I am relatively new using voiceover on Mac and I’ve run into an issue where I’m trying to use the pause/resume feature in my notes app pressing the control button, and when it pauses no problem, but won’t resume where I left off. I don’t know if I accidentally toggled on or off an option I shouldn’t have, or if this is an isolated issue. I’m using a 2019 iMac on the latest software, and I’ve run into this issue with previous versions so I’m afraid this is user error. Tried searching Mac forums to no avail so any solutions are much appreciated!

I only found one solution - will this help?

Pause or resume speech
To pause or resume speech on your Mac, do one of the following:

Press the Control key.

When the VoiceOver modifier is the Caps Lock key, press that key.

Mute speech
To mute speech on your Mac, do one of the following:

Press VO-Command-Shift-Right Arrow until you hear Volume, then press VO-Command-Shift-Down Arrow repeatedly to lower and eventually mute VoiceOver.

Open VoiceOver Utility (press VO-F8 when VoiceOver is on), click the Speech category, click Voices, then select Mute speech.

If you move the VoiceOver cursor after speech is paused, VoiceOver begins speaking the item that’s in the VoiceOver cursor.

Unfortunately I tried this without success.

Maybe you can reset VoiceOver settings?

Tried this as well. However the key works fine for pausing/resuming on my iPad, so if there was a way to export my iPad VO Settings to Mac, maybe that would work? Though I’m not sure iPad and macOS play nice with each other in that regard.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure. Hopefully, you find end solution for this.

I stumbled on this thread while trying to set this function up for a parent - we were having the same issue! However, I found that the bug only happened when I had changed the voice (to Siri for example). If I changed the voice back to the default option (I don't remember the exact name, Alex maybe?) then the bug disappeared and pause and resume worked correctly. Hope this helps!

It worked! Thank you! I never would have known since I only use the Siri voices, but for whatever odd reason it’s the Siri voices that don’t work when enabled but every other voice works fine with pause/resume. Weird bug.

Report it to apple accessibility I think they should know.

Is this also an issue outside of the Notes app? I feel like I stopped using it for similar reasons, but it's been years and I don't remember.

Yes it is. Very annoying considering it works absolutely fine on iPad.
