Hi guys, new to this sub. Recently became permanently monocular due to traumatic optic neuropathy after a surgery to fix an orbital fracture. Any tips for getting back to driving? (self.Blind)

My life before my injury involved a lot of driving, so I’m going to need to get back to it eventually. But I’m terrified. My depth perception is pretty good, but behind the wheel is different. My left eye is the one that no longer has vision, so the idea of making left turns is kinda freaking me out. I live in a major very populated crowded city, and the other night I was in the passenger seat while my partner was driving. A pedestrian darted across the street from the left side out of nowhere without looking right in front of the car and we almost hit them. Luckily he was able to stop the car in time. All I kept thinking was “if it were me driving, I would have hit that person because I wouldn’t have been able to see them coming from my left side”. Does anyone have any tips for easing back into driving safely?

Why must you drive? Can you not drive, and find a diffferent type of job?

So sorry about what happened to you, it’s a huge change in your life

To add to the other answer, I’d practice driving in empty car parks, for example, to get a feel for what you can see and to get confidence back again. I expect you’ll I need to move your head a bit more to look left, but just with your right eye you can see a fair amount….. I’ve just walked home and had my left eye closed to see the difference, just looking forwards. Even with both eyes open anything to the left is still in peripheral vision.

I wouldn’t get too obsessed about the near accident. Even people with full vision don’t see everything especially from the side and you can’t see everywhere at once …. so it’ll just be a matter of looking around more.

Good luck!

Would it be possible to take a few lessons at a driving school so you can safely get used to drive with your new vision?
