Seeking Job/Employment Help (self.Blind)
submitted by bonouser826
I am a college student seeking employment. I am finishing up a degree online and would love any advice regarding accessibility with employment and I have a few specific questions:
1: If pursuing a cashier/retail job, how accessible is the software/register for people with no vision? Also, navigating a store, stocking shelves, etc.
2: If pursuing a work-from-home job, such as with a call center, has anyone had any experience with the software these companies use? If so, any comments on accessibility are greatly appreciated.
I would also be incredibly grateful for any other comments or suggestions regarding employment.
Thank you!

Speaking from the perspective of an unrelated disability, you may be able to check with your local Department of Rehabilitation (or similarly named agency). They can help fast-track you to jobs that ARE accessible.

As a job coach Id advise you that most of the software on the cash registers is not that accessible as for work from home the software can be accessed though many different means it depends on the company (id advise to stay away from QVC)

Where are you located and would you be willing to move for work with relocation expenses paid? There are many jobs available for people who are blind and visually impaired through NIB (National Industries for the Blind) affiliated sister agencies. I work for one called Envision and started off as a clerk at a base supply center on Fort Carson in Colorado Springs. I have since been promoted and moved to the location of the corporate office in Kansas. If you would like to know more feel free to send me a DM.

I have several Industries for the Blind locations around me in NC, but my boyfriend and a few other people I know have a very difficult time of getting jobs there. Also, I do live an hour away from the nearest IFB center, in a very rural area, so travel would be difficult.
I am almost finished with a degree in Commercial Music, and if possible, I'd love a job doing anything pertaining to my degree. However, as I'm finishing school and living in a very rural area, there are not many of those opportunities around me and there probably won't be for the foreseeable future, so I'm trying my hardest to find something I can do now to help me move out on my own and pay for my last semester. I have spoken with my VR counselor, and she said she would let me know of any job leads she hears of, but there has been nothing so far and I spoke with her about this months ago.

What is your degree in and maybe you could use it?

Both of those are not very accessible especially the first. Pos systems are not accessible at all.
