Windows PDF reader with darkmode and line-by-line reading? (self.Blind)
submitted by feladirr
Does anyone know a PDF reader that has a reader mode with dark mode/different colour contrast options and that can display one line at a time and obscures the rest? Edge browser has this for its immersive reader function however unfortunately this function is limited to websites and does not work with its PDF reader. I've tried Adobe Reader, Foxit and Google Drive so far

$1 to illustrate

edit: thanks everyone

Read & write for google does that, along with a whole lot of other things. It’s a chrome extension but it does PDF too. I’ve used it in college to make my textbooks accessible. It is costly though. I got it free through my college.

Thank you, I'll give the trial a go. Shame that there is no one-off payment version in case I like it

I'm going to second R&W. There are plugins like Visor for Chrome or Screen Masking for Edge/Chrome but they follow the mouse and aren't the best. You also have to already be in dark mode too- it won't turn on for you.

Try the free Easyreader https://yourdolphin.com/en-gb/products/individuals/easyreader-app by Dolphin who make the SuperNova screen reader and magnifier software.

It is available for Windows, Android / Chromebook, iPhone and Kindle

I'm not certain if it will read PDFs ($1 but if it doesn't and you can convert the PDF to another format then you can use this,

Ah, I use SuperNova too. Thanks forr the suggestion, I'll try it

If you already have SuperNova then have you used the Scan and Read feature to read a PDF?
feladirr [OP] 3 points 1y ago
I have not. I'm not a big user of text-to-speech, but I'll give it a try and see how it goes

I know someone who uses Supernova and they often use Scan and Read to convert PDFs to MS-Word format then read them in that format.

I think it uses a version of Abbyy Finereader for Optical character recognition (OCR) so it can handle PDFs that are just scans of text and don't contain the readable text embedded in the PDF.

An app called "$1" by https://www.voicedream.com/ runs on iOS (iPhones / iPads) and does a very good job of reading line by line with a highlight on the word in synchronisation with it being read.

Wow, this looks fantastic. Unfortunately I'm on Windows and they don't seem to support that

I think Kurzweil 3000 can do this.

Use Microsoft edge browser with immersive reader to open the pdf
feladirr [OP] 3 points 1y ago
How? If I open a PDF in Edge it will just use its PDF reader instead of the immersive reader
