Just got accepted into University, how will me wearing an eyepatch be received ? (self.Blind)
submitted by jeffy3000
Hi, 22M with alternating exotropia from birth, no depth perception and monocular vision in one eye at a time. If I have a fixed point to gaze at I can consciously switch the eye I am viewing out of while the other turns into blur. While moving around in day to day life and socialising the alternation is completely involuntary and switches depending on the most efficient eye to use, causing me stress and disorientation while looking quite ugly in the process.

I'm not going to whine about how it's effected my life so to get to the point, I have begun wearing an eye patch because I find it helps me focus and know exactly what I am looking at while eleviating most of the anxiety that comes with such condition. This was the only solution I could think up to my life long problem of being looked at differently while viewing the world literally differently.

As someone who plays music in two local bands, I already publically incorporate the eyepatch into my outfit, but something about wearing it at University or in the professional world makes me stress and wonder if the eyepatch idea was a feasible idea after all.
Any and all advice and words are appreciated

Forgive me for what is probably a dumb question, because I'm sure you've already done it, but have you tried glasses with prisms in the lenses? My son has the same condition and his is able to be corrected with prisms - his could be more mild, though.

As for the eye patch, I wouldn't worry about it. I wore one in high school for a bit after eye surgery and no one gave it a second thought. If you just confidently go about. your day, no one will think anything of it other than "oh, that guy must have something wrong with his eye."

I’m not OP but YES, my family member JUST got his prism glasses a month ago. He seemed confused and didn’t want to wear them for almost a week but now he actually has peripheral vision. And his new computer glasses will have the weaker eye be foggy. He had been wearing an eye patch to avoid the double vision but we realized it was shut ALL the time, and of course if the eye never gets light then you lose what you do have.

Not a dumb question at all, when I was a child I had multiple surgeries and used glasses for treatment but I'm not sure if it's the kind you're talking about. However in my teens and adult life when I have been to vision specialists they have never mentioned prism glasses as treatment and would only ever suggest the surgery. I will enquire about prism glasses for sure. Thanks

At university nobody will care. Students are at a time in their life when they are gaining freedom for the first time, experimenting with different looks and trying to find out who they are outside their family's influence for the first time. You'll be fine.

As for the professional world, as long as you wear professional clothes (it might depend on where you work exactly what this means) you'll be fine. It might even be a good starting point for connecting to your colleagues.

People don't really bring up my eye patch when I'm out in public. If anything, my white cane always draws more attention to me than my eye patch ever has.

I think this hugely depends on the patch.

I'm not a Dan Crenshaw fan, but that's a man who knows how to wear an eyepatch.

Dude looks like an MIA GI Joe that went Cobra.

Or that hardcore one that General Chang wore in Star Trek VI?

I think the key to "a cool patch" is in its coverage, which you've likely experienced in your outfits on stage.

Buy a full ROYGBIV set and color-coordinate with your outfits: instead of fearing the accent, lean hard into it.

I mean, "pocket squares" are just snot-rags: it's so much about presentation rather than function.

You want the function, so focus on that presentation - the size/shape of the patch - the colorations - strap thickness - material used (leather is always fashionable).

Recognize the fact that, if you're wearing an eye patch, people are going to notice.

Do you want them to awkwardly avoid talking about it or do you want people to say, "Dude, that's a cool eye patch."

You match your purple socks with your purple patch and I guarantee you, there are women (or fashionable gay dudes - whatever you're into) who will notice.

I completely agree it's all in the outfit and the swag

My first few days have passed, I simply dress well and tasteful, people have only had good to say so far. I'm leaning into the advantage it gives me of becoming a walking ice breaker and fashion icon 😂 pretty much wearing a MGSIV Big Boss patch with a white dress shirt, long black cotton dress pants and doc martens, with or without the patch I'm amongst the best dressed. The way I see it an eye patch gives me the right to go full on anime character.

You will find that almost everyone your age is looking for a way to be unique - girls will get puppies in lieu of babies - guys will dye their hair blue or be "the naked guy at parties."

I guarantee that there are people who are jealous of you right now, because you don't have to find it - you don't have to fake it - you actually are unique, just walking along.

Your words make me feel like a super Saiyan, I appreciate the advice immensely.

The first real class I attended felt like a tv show.
I walk in a few mins late and the class goes from loud to silent, I give the lecture my acknowledgement and begin my search for a seat. Covid procedure is hyped up to the extreme, near everyone was one seat apart and I couldn't see a covid safe spot for myself, it felt rude to park myself next to someone so I simply ask the lecturer from across the room "uhhhh where do I sit?" and am met with a sarcastic response and various glares.

The class remains silent except for one kind lady who immediately offered me a seat next to her, and boom my first friend is in the same age group and in the exact position as I am in life, trying various industries and have ended up in the same class in search of something better. I am confident and excited to see what comes my way.

I have friends that wear an eyepatch. One goes for the pirate style, sometimes taking a toy parakeet on his shoulder. The other friend coordinates the color of the patch along with her clothing.

People will be interested, but no one will judge you in a bad manner. It could also be stylish to a degree.
