Description: an abstract painting loosely resembling a face with black holes for eyes and for a mouth. I am blind in both eyes due to Retinal Dystrophy and I have come up with a method so that I can paint again - even though I cannot see what I am making. I want to start sharing my works! (i.redd.it)

My fiancée took the photo. She is truly amazing. My method is simple - I have someone pick out a variety of colors they would like me to paint with, (I cannot see to do so), and then I line the colors up from left to right - keeping close track of where I place each of them around me. I then, "feel", the canvas or other material I am working with so I know my boundaries and then, I just start painting what is in my mind. I cannot see any of my works - they come purely from the expression of my mind. I like to paint for people what I am feeling at the moment or, (when I paint as a gift), I paint how I feel about the person who picked out the colors. I call this one The Jitters. I was anxious and jittery and a group of my friends picked out the colors for me to use. I am very insecure about even sharing this, I know my friends are probably being way too nice to me about how well it actually turned out. I just miss painting and I cannot see what I am painting anymore. Took me a few years after going blind to be able to paint, so I hope it isn't too terrible.

I love this idea. The image is what you say is a face. I could see it when I first glanced. Your description just solidified it. If you ever take any orders I wouldn’t be opposed to purchasing. You have a really nice talent. Also I have a retina deformation that’s caused them to be somewhat removed from my optic nerve. It’s a birth defect. So I really do consider this to be truly beautiful. Thanks to your fiancé for the nice capture as well.

Thank you very much, you have no clue how much that means to me! It takes a lot of time and mental effort to do, but I love doing it, even if I can't see it! If there is one thing that unites us blind, visually impaired and low vision folks - it is our resilience! Our community rocks, I was afraid to share this to be honest, mostly because I cannot see it, but this made me feel much better. Stay strong and keep keeping on, friend!

You should be incredibly proud. It would honestly make me stop to take it in if I saw it in a gallery, even without knowing you did it totally blind. Its incredibly expressive!
Thank you for posting this! I still have some sight but have recently stopped painting because it was getting too difficult to paint in the ways I used to, but you've inspired me to figure out a way to adapt and not lose the things that bring me joy. I hope you keep posting!

Oh my goodness! Thank you so much! I am so glad you've decided to formulate a way to aid you in painting! Thank you, thank you, thank you - the support means so much to me, you've no clue! Next time I get a fresh canvas I will be sure to post what I make of it!

This is an amazing piece. The interrupted horizontal lines give it a sense of motion and the eyes and mouth are almost haunting, in a way that beautifully demonstrates the title.

My preferred form of visual expression is photography, mostly landscape and still life, because I can take my time and zoom on however much I need. I understand what you mean about resilience.

Thank you very much! I used to love photography, even when I could barely see enough to do it, very meditative! Stay resilient, friend!

I've read about totally blind photographers, by the way. I think 3D printing could be really good for making things like landscape or portrait photography accessible.

That is an epic idea! I've always wanted to make a tactile painting that other blind folks can feel, like a tactile painting of raised textures and such! So many creative ways to make art! :)

Absolutely. There's also heat sensitive paint that will swell up, so to speak, if you want to be more manual about it.

This is amazing! There's so much expressiveness and emotion in it. It really draws you in and is pretty captivating. It's abstracted of course, but that's not a negative. Abstract art can be hard to do well and this is done really well. It definitely feels "gallery worthy" and I'd love to see some of your other work.

I studied art in undergrad and still dabble from time to time, but I'm more "paint a pretty picture." I have never mastered the ability to capture the raw emotion in something like you've done here. Well done!

I love this. I definitely see the face, and I love how the horizontal lines remind me of ripples in the water, like looking at a reflection. The colors are beautiful, reminds me of sunflowers, or maybe the sun, which I love. Please share more of your work! :)

Wow, this is incredible. I paint a lot too and I’m pretty much mostly blind safe for a little bit of vision left. One thing I like to do is label my paint cans with braille. It really works.

Thank you! I am still in the process of learning braille, but that is some advice I will surely be using! :)
