What are some good speech to text apps for iPhone? (self.Blind)
submitted by the_orca_jungle
I am asking because I am a college student and I went to my first lecture today. I just recorded the professor talking which is fine, but I would like an app that includes the recording feature but also has speech to text software.

I like Otter. it's not perfect, no speech recognition app is - but it works well enough for my needs.

Just seconding Otter. As was mentioned, nothing is perfect, but Otter is really good. It also has some notetaking functions that will let you highlight important parts in your transcript. I don’t like subscriptions, but it’s worth checking out.

ok thanks

Hehe actually, it's a godsend for boring meetings. I can skimread at about 930 wpm...

Is it very accessible with voice over? I am totally blind.
retrolental_morose 1 points 1y ago
I've not done much editing with it, but reading transcripts seems to work well enough either in the app or on the web

Interesting. My school actually offers it as a thing people can use but I didn’t know if it was accessible, realistically I don’t know how much I’d honestly use it, but….. just wondering if I could. May be useful for those more complex stem classes.

You could use voice memo on the iphone if you have an iphone. :) Just say "Hey, Siri open voice memo." And siri will open it for you if you have "hey siri" enabled. :)

aw ty and yw :)

Yes it is still free. What they are asking in this post though is more like transcribing audio from speech like a recording of someone.

Ages ago a teach (SAT prep) said the more varied the ways you interact with information the better you retain in. Hear word and it’s meaning (1), read it and it’s meeting (2), write it (3). And so on.

If you listen to the recording and take notes, you heard it in class, you heard it again on the recording, you took notes.

thanks for the insight :)

I'm using $1 at meetings and it works perfectly for me. You can make a record right in the app and then transcribe it into text. It even recognizes different speakers which can be very useful. When I'm done I can export it to WhatsApp, Google Drive, or mail directly from the app.

oo thanks

What do you mean? Do you want an app that records voice then outputs it to text?

I don’t think that exists.
the_orca_jungle [OP] 2 points 1y ago
oh ok i guess I will use a dictation app then. i think i can use the native speech to text software in the iphone
bradley22 4 points 1y ago
You could, but sometimes it’s really bad.

Why don’t you just listen to the recording, and write down the important parts on a laptop or a pc?
the_orca_jungle [OP] 2 points 1y ago
yeah i think i’ll try that thanks :)
bradley22 2 points 1y ago
no problem :)

I prefer $1. Their tech support is very responsive. I started with Otter but after a year I still haven't gotten a single reply to any tech support questions I've sent. $1 works great with a braille display. Definitely worth checking out.

Is otter accessible with screen reading? My school provides it and I could get access not sure how often I’d actually use it but is it even worth it if you’re soly a voice over user? I am totally blind.
garlic-lover 1 points 1y ago
I am totally blind as well. Both $1 and $1 are very accessible with VoiceOver. I've used $1 the most lately. Even if you have functional hearing, having a transcript you can have have read to you by VoiceOver later is very helpful. $1 gives you 40 minutes of recording time per session for free while $1 has reduced their free users to 30 minutes at a time,. You have to stop and then start a new session / recording when the timer runs out. If you just want audio, an app like Voice Recorder or iTalk might be what you want without the time limits.

My community college has an ottter subscription. He worked hard to get it and is all over it. That and a few others. Really good guy, honestly and a great friend of mine. At least professionally we’ll see if after his retirement or at some point if he’d want to stay in touch out of professional circles. We’re pretty good with each other and so I get to hear it. So I know about it, he wasn’t actually telling me about it to use it but I asked him what’s new. I think we were initially at first talking about older technology physical equipment that some people would basically take, and then would not return.

So when I saw it I recognized the name immediately. It’s like oh yeah, that guy was all over it, not going to give his name on here even if it’s not all that uncommon.

That's great. A subscription changes things significantly. As a stand alone user it can be difficult to afford the added services and higher time limits. My perspective has been from a deafblind user that wants something for when I'm traveling without internet access. Thanks for sharing your perspective.
