How to highlight text on a web page using a screen reader (self.Blind)
submitted by tylandlannister
I am a totally blind individual working in customer support, and part of my duties include writing userguide for our web based product.

When writing user guides, I need to insert screenshots of what I'm explaining. I generally use alt+print screen to capture the current window. And that's where the problem starts.

I need to highlight certain parts of text within the screenshot. While using shift and the arrow keys selects text, it only shows it as highlighted in editable text. On non-editable text, the items will be selected, but they don't appear highlighted to the eye.

I need specific things I'm explaining to be highlighted. Of course, if there was a way of only capturing the selected text and nothing else, that would even be better.

My stack:

Windows 11 with NVDA.

My impairment: 100% visually impaired.

Any suggestions will be appreciated, thanks.

Edit:

After messing around, it looks like if I select something with my arrows, then hold down control + alt, the highlight becomes visual. Still testing how good this is.

The problem is that you're highlighting a portion of NVDA's virtual buffer, not the actual website itself.

So, yes, if you were to copy the highlighted text, it would go to your clipboard, but visually nothing is getting highlighted.

Having said that though, I don't actually know of a way to fix this, unfortunately. You'd have to highlight in focus mode, but at that point you can't see what you're selecting.

JAWS can highlight where you are on a page, I believe, but I'm not sure if this particular issue would be solved by that, and it would still look different to what people would normally associate highlighted text with. This feels like something you might have to get assistance with; just indicate what needs highlighting and have someone do it in post-editing.

I believe that NVDA can highlight the currently focused item as you navigate. If not, JAWS can definitely do this, and has numerous options for customizing the color, the highlight style, etc.

Hmmm. I'll check if I can maybe mess around with the colours. Currently, I'm able to select, but someone looking over my shoulder with the naked eye cannot see that I've

selected / highlighted anything.

You're looking for a setting in NVDA. Honestly, I'd recommend JAWS though because the functionality you're looking for is more developed.
