College Major Ideas (self.Blind)
submitted by Beneficial-Durian-44
Hey folks, I have a question for current and former college students.

So I want to start my college career this year but I don't know what I should go for.

All of my past ideas died with the majority of my vision. (They were all visual arts)

This is where I need your guys help/input.

What did you go to school for and how come?

Thankyou in advance!

While there are certain majors that blind people cannot do, like visual arts, I wouldn't limit yourself so hard. What are your interests? What are you passionate about? I'd look at all your interests and go from there. People who are blind study a variety of things including communication, psychology, computer science, anthropology, science, etc. Also, if you're unsure, you can also consider going into an undeclared major and just try various courses for awhile.

Thank you I really needed to hear this!

Computer science. Take a look at the majors offered where you’re going, and see what sounds interesting.

I'm going for a BA in Zoo and Aquarium Sciences with minors in Psychology and Creative Writing.
I always knew that I wanted to work with animals, and this field definitely has it's challenges for someone with a visual impairment, but there are definitely workarounds for it. I got a lot of backlash from family that were VERY concerned that I was going to get eaten by something (to the point I had distant relatives calling closer ones asking if they were actually ok with me making the choice I made). Thankfully, I have very supportive close family. The fact that I have yet to be eaten by something also helps.
Don't short change yourself on what you think you can do, and don't let people tell you that you can't do something because of your vision. It's up to you to make what you will of your impairment. Having a good support network also helps a ton.

Well I went to school before I went blind, but I studied psychology and then law. I practiced law for four years before changing careers. Now I'm a software engineer and completely self taught. My only real advice is to try to find something you truly enjoy. Don't chase prestige or money.

Good luck.

That's impressive, thank you for the advice!

Good advice. I know a lot of people in this day and age wanting to do compsci because it has money in it, and it’s like. Yeah, so are you sure? Might and maybe but do you enjoy the work?

Have you tried career type assessments or systems? Sometimes you don’t actually have to take the tests just research and study they are great tools. I wasn’t sure myself, wondered around school for 10 years before I figured it out, I had a clue but didn’t see it right literally in front of my face. I actually picked up the tool books and read on the personality type system, learnt a lot. A whole fricking lot about me, who I am and how I work, what my strengths and weaknesses are and then figured out from there what I should do and what it sounds like paired with a lot of self evaluation will I enjoy this what do I think.

Also taking a look at what you gravitate towards. Get out and volunteer while you go to college and it doesn’t have to be regular homeless shelter, animal shelter, soup kitchen. But anywhere. If you could volunteer just anywhere? Where? Local hospital? Computer lab? Art studio? Music store? A music studio? A video game hang out place? Do you hang out with the veterans? Do you hang out naturally at animal shelters? Nursing homes? Bringing meals to people? Cooking for the homeless? Crisis hot lines? Something else? What? Where?

What is your niche then?

I was all over the place and have associate degrees in English creative writing and Political science. At the moment I am going back and making up missing general education stuff for a stem degree. Blind people are waaaaay waaaaaay under represented in stem by the way. Definitely definitely not for everyone though.

I am currently computer science.

I took the brigs meyers, socionics, and enneagram seriously, and as a gifts test and a introspection type thing, and got cir or cri in that order pretty much and really thought through it. I’ve taken all sorts of personality inventories and really studied and thought about them and who I am. Much more than most blind people. I am the technical ESTJ and as technical russian lse, and a 1w2 so/sp.

Then I stopped and thought about things it seems true. That’s where this username comes from. Technical and pragmatic that’s me. I said that’s true. I am.

Then it occured to me a few things.

I’ve been working on and off and continuously volunteered for 10 years in technology mostly information technology, well a cross between that and assistive tech. I taught assistive tech for a bit and teaching. Was just……. Nope not my thing. Heh! More the IT type temperament.

Everyone also flocks to me for how do you fix my computer. I am the local can you fix my computer type deal person. You’d be surprise who even would come to you when they have trouble heh! Been the fix it person for years. As a teenager I was the blind community at least the general group I knew fix it person. People asked me for computer advice.

I also hang out with a lot of information technology people. And since I’ve said I wanted to study this and go in to assistive tech and that industry have been getting a lot of good connections there actually. I’ve always gotten with a lot of them.

I’ve even joked at some point, if anyone should study compsci it should be me. And here I am hahaha!

I’ve volunteered a lot and it’s not been a lot of other things I could do but online tech support, hanging out at the computer lab and helping people, volunteering and eventually working at the computer lab in the disabilities office.

I mean, I’ve done my fair share of advocacy and representing too. I’ve been doing advocacy and representing since preteen, but…… but…. I’ve enjoyed…… it…… but……. Not quite like tinkering with computers and helping others? I am quite passionate about assistive tech and working assistive tech too, and what it can do for people and pushes for technology for better and greater equality.

I just thought of one, for a while I thought because the roomer was out apple watch 7 would carrry apple glucose measurements cgm type of deal, which it isn’t yet. We’re still waiting! I was really hopeful for that one but knew there was a chance it wouldn’t be there. But I was all over it because I know that will be a game changer for blind diabetics for instance.

I really like the apple watches and how accessible it is. And am really a fan and stuff. I am passionate about my assistive tech.

Depends on what you like?

If art is your thing, why not tactile art? If you still have some vision visual art is not out, even if you don’t, you can still create! What about teaching? If i was to restart from my teens I would buckle down on teaching and go onto becoming a TCVI! Teach art for a few years then go back to get the TCVI?
