So I just walked into a glass door for the first time (self.Blind)
submitted by the_orca_jungle
Yeah, I was hoping this wouldn’t happen to me but kinda knew my time would come eventually. Nobody saw it but it still hurt. Glass didn’t break. I’m guessing this won’t be the last time.

Yep, it happens. I took a fall getting out of a bus today (driver parked far away from the curb and I didn’t notice)
the_orca_jungle [OP] 5 points 1y ago
ouch
River-Song-1986 13 points 1y ago
I once ran into a handicap parking sign.
the_orca_jungle [OP] 6 points 1y ago
oof
DHamlinMusic 10 points 1y ago
Yeah happens. I’ve walked into at least three doors, plus sent myself to the ER right after losing my sight cause I hit a wall hard enough to knock myself out for a second.
the_orca_jungle [OP] 7 points 1y ago
oh no. i’ve walked into many walls before but walking into a glass door was different. i am legally blind so in still have a bit of vision left. it was quite startling and i am kinda scared of glass doors now
DHamlinMusic 7 points 1y ago
I can sense when I am near a solid object as long as it is large enough, my enemy is sides of doors.
the_orca_jungle [OP] 7 points 1y ago
haha my biggest enemies are escalators and movie theater aisles
DHamlinMusic 5 points 1y ago
Have not been out much since losing my sight as this lovely plague has made that hard.
RollForParadise 9 points 1y ago
Hazzah! Congratulations on joining the club :-)

But for real… The Apple store doors are my arch nemesis lol
FoggyRiver 7 points 1y ago
They are awful. They are a risk for everyone, not just the blind!
the_orca_jungle [OP] 4 points 1y ago
haha thanks
CategoryHoliday9705 3 points 1y ago
My mom once tried to open an apple store door even though it was already open.. She has 20/20 vision

While using a cane?
the_orca_jungle [OP] 7 points 1y ago
no i don’t use a cane. i was walking through an open glass door and didn’t realize the other one was closed so i smacked my face into it. yeah. i am thinking about cane training now. i mostly struggle with dark settings so never thought about getting one but i feel like i should learn now.
VI_Shepherd 5 points 1y ago
Lol I've ran in to a few glass doors, myself!
They had no dicernable border or feature, and the dumb handle blended in with the carpet they had behind it, so I almost broke their door, lol
That's why I use my cane much more often now. Keeps things like that from happening, hahaha.
Glad you're alright though!
the_orca_jungle [OP] 3 points 1y ago
wow same thing happened to me. i thought i broke it because it made a terrible noise like the whole thing was gonna snap off. i should probably go slow around glass doors and windows too
VI_Shepherd 3 points 1y ago
Yeah, I just go with the thought of, "trust no doorway or walkway ever again. Always use my cane." Lol!
nadmaximus 4 points 1y ago
I've walked into a few in my time. It's such a shock...so abrupt, loud, and confusing. I've never felt as much like a primal, scared animal as the first few seconds after I walked into an invisible barrier. I would compare it to being in a car wreck.

...I am not visually impaired. Glass is tricksy.
SeptemberJoy 4 points 1y ago
I've got enough vision to kind of tell what's in (some) vending machines. Unfortunately I don't have enough vision to notice the glass and bounce off it 9/10 times. No applause from onlookers yet.
SoapyRiley 4 points 1y ago
I have been doing this all my life despite being sighted until recently. Something on the bottom would catch my eye and I’d turn my head down and start leaning forward and lose track of where the front of the machine was above my glasses and CrACK! Maybe it was my body’s way of toughening up my head for all the collisions the glaucoma is causing these days. Oof
the_orca_jungle [OP] 3 points 1y ago
i shall applaud you
[deleted] 3 points 1y ago
Knock on wood but I’ve never had the pleasure to do that quite yet but I do take out everyone’s screen doors like no ones business!!!
the_orca_jungle [OP] 1 points 1y ago
no screen doors are safe!
vip-sizzles 3 points 1y ago
I did that once in college. Door was usually kept open except for the one time it wasn't. Wasn't paying attention & bumped right into it. Often happens when I'm accustomed to going through open doors & then the door is no longer kept open.
the_orca_jungle [OP] 3 points 1y ago
i am in college right now and can confirm there are way too many glass doors
Shadowwynd 3 points 1y ago
Full glass doors catch their share of fully sighted people too (some are distracted on on phones, some just didn't look in the right place to see hidden hinges or something). My science teacher in high school knocked himself out on one.
the_orca_jungle [OP] 1 points 1y ago
wow glass doors are scary
alittlethemlin 3 points 1y ago
one time at work, i ran into a full metal door and almost broke my nose. (it was in my non existent peripheral and my depth perception of where i thought it was completely messed me up).
Amonwilde 3 points 1y ago
I was in the Microsoft building in NYC years ago and I felt like a trapped bird. It was all glass, the walls and doors and everything, and they must have cleaned it all the time, too...
sarashinai 3 points 1y ago
Apple Store, me. In front of lots of people. Left a nose oil mark on the glass. Partner laughed.
the_orca_jungle [OP] 1 points 1y ago
oh my
sarashinai 2 points 1y ago
Yeah, I don't really "get" floating panes of glass. I mean aesthetically. I'm fine when they're in a door frame but just being there. Makes me appreciate people who stick those bird silhouettes on their windows :D
PaleontologistTrue74 3 points 1y ago
Ouch. Yea fam I've done that before. It wasnt to bad was it? I've heard horror stories of nose breakers.
the_orca_jungle [OP] 2 points 1y ago
it was more startling to me because i had never done that before. it hurt a bit but i mostly just worried that i broke the door
PaleontologistTrue74 3 points 1y ago
You'd be surprised. Those doors are tough even tho they are made of glass.

Get a cold ( or is hot better? ) compress for your nose.
Winnmark 3 points 1y ago
Actually this happens to normal folks too.

I remember reading an article about Apple employees putting sticky notes on the glass doors of the corporate office to distinguish glass doors from glass walls
grackthecowbell 3 points 1y ago
I just want to thank you all for sharing your stories. Today was a rough vision day, so I needed a giggle

Also, there's a dent in my best friend's bedroom wall that matches my head... it was my first time there and pre-cane I wasn't orientated yet
the_orca_jungle [OP] 1 points 1y ago
you just made me laugh so hard
Emmenias 3 points 1y ago
Since it is extremely common for people going blind to refuse to use one, I gotta say: This to me sounds like a really good hint that you should start to use a white cane. I know it may feel embarrassing to do so because society is fucking ableist and we all internalise that too well, but running into doors is embarrassing too, as well as painful and potentially quite harmful if the glass breaks.
I cannot promise you will never run into things (or people!) with a cane — it also depends on your technique, attention, and height of the obstacle — but I promise it will happen much less often.
the_orca_jungle [OP] 2 points 1y ago
yeah i think that’s a good idea. i guess i’ve always felt weird about it but i think i should try it out. maybe one of those foldable canes? i don’t know. i haven’t received training yet so i am gonna have to look into that. thanks
Emmenias 3 points 1y ago
Excellent! I hope it goes well, and helps you regain your independence (and the integrity of your nose)! :)
Definitely foldable; non-folding canes are way too cumbersome to lug around with you everywhere.
Training will definitely help you a lot, at least to pick up the basics if nothing else. If there are any blindness organisations nearby, I'm sure they'd be happy to help.
dunktheball 3 points 1y ago
I was walking full speed years back and rammed into a divider between 2 glass doors. lol. It really hurt and I just kept walking like nothing happened.
the_orca_jungle [OP] 1 points 1y ago
wow you must be quite tough
dunktheball 3 points 1y ago
Not really, but was just too embarrassed to try to do anything else, but I hit it right with my head/nose. haha.
rachristia123 2 points 1y ago
My last office was full of glass. It was bound to happen.

Halloween everyone was in the break room celebrating. I walked full speed into the glass doors on my way to the bathroom.

I hit it so hard the door reverberated in the wall. Seriously wondered if the glass would shatter.

The worst part? No one in the room even laughed. Three people gasped. There was at least 20 people in the room and everyone just stared.

Thank god it was Halloween. The huge lump on my forehead went well with my zombie costume that night.
the_orca_jungle [OP] 1 points 1y ago
always look on the bright side :)
carolineecouture 2 points 1y ago
Ugh, it's happened to me. It wasn't even a full glass door. Broke my glasses cut myself. It was a mess. I lived. Good luck to you!
