What creeps everyone out? (self.Blind)
submitted by moonpegasus19
The title says it all. I've noticed that certain things creep me out that seem to scare sighted people less. Like very empty spaces, large rooms, and certain sounds. I also feel very strongly that the uncanny valley does exist for audio with me. I remember when I was very young and heard the whisper voice that came with the version of eloquence jaws uses. I was around seven. It freaked me out so badly, I didn't touch the computer a while afterward. I also had a meltdown after I heard a karaoke machine. None of those things scare me now, but sometimes I can still be unsettled by sound in a very pleasant way. What got me thinking about this whas when I finished Bird Box. It wasn't scary at all to me. I wondered if anyone else has found certain things creep you out differently now that you are blind?

I’m not blind so I can’t advocate fully but I’m very impaired and mostly night blind. My dad just moved out into the middle of the woods a year ago and being outside when it’s dark is a scary part of the day for me. There’s all sorts of animals out here and it probably doesn’t help that I watch true crime shit all day. Another thing is traffic. People drive like crazy. And navigating airports because I can’t get proper accommodation.

I don't like walking around in the dark either. I have ROP and I have some vision mostly in my left eye. So going out at night really freaks me out. In the daytime, I'm ok.

When the sun reflects off car or bus windows onto me. It makes me jump or duck as it feels like something is about to hit me. And then I feel silly

i don’t really have what specifically freaks me out, but i get scared a lot easier than my friends. i’m super jumpy, especially when something comes from my peripheral vision (or lack thereof). im legally blind, but my glasses can get me to 20/25 vision, but i have no peripheral.

also the way you talk about this, i think you would really enjoy The Magnus Archives podcast. it’s a fictional horror podcast, and explores themes very similarly to this.

Movement. I’m constantly seeing movement and I can’t determine what it is. Flag flying? A bird? My floaters? Some weird neurological phenomenon? A true hallucination? When I turn to look at what I thought I saw peripherally, the image of what I was looking at and what I’m now looking at overlap and by the time the old one fades, whatever was moving is long gone and then I feel like I’m in a horror movie. Also crowded places are worse. I’ve always been claustrophobic but now I’m claustrophobic and I can’t find the exit.

I am not a big fan of overly out going people the more jumpy and loud the more nervous I get

I feel sudden sharp noises have gotten harder to deal with since I lost half my vision. As a kid, I would be happy to watch the old "Youtube Poop" videos, where most of the humor derived from dubbing a sudden scream or sharp sound effect over a cartoon. But modern TicTocks or Youtube Shorts bother the hell out of me. The sudden transition to the loud music when they first start out, and the general noisiness compared to other forms of video. It gives me a shivery feeling.

More logically: It spooks me when someone crosses in front of my vision from my left, but not my right. I have no left vision (hemianopia). I lost the vision as a teenager. I wonder if my brain "remembers" that there was vision there, so when an object suddenly appears in the center of my vision, without having been tracked from the side, it makes me jump. Whereas when something appears in my right peripheral, it's no big deal.

I'm dealing with the same things. I'm down to mono vision and noises/sounds that used to not bother me, scare the poo poo out of me anymore.

Sorry, but where did you get that whisper voice of eloquence? I gotta use this to freak out my friends. One thing that really freaks me out as a person with barely any usable vision is being in a room with tons of objects but not being able to see any of it. Either because it’s too dark or something.

I can’t help you with a whisper voice, but I think eSpeak has one.

Okay. So yeah, the loud sounds are a big one. I don't get creeped out by them as much anymore. The only thing I have to worry about is if they happen suddenly without warning, and without me causing it in any way. Thunder I am usually okay with because I know that if it's raining, then it will get loud, but if I cook, and my smoke alarm goes off, I can't deal with it. It doesn't help that I feel like I am not in control of it. I have been blind since birth so I have developed coping mechanisms over the years. Loud music is fine, because I love music, and usually I'm the one causing it, or I am somewhere that music is likely going to be heard. I don't really like traveling by myself because being outside with no refference points scare me. There is too much open space. I also think at this point in history, trying to be a pedestrian on streets that aren't deliberately designed to be walking streets, or designed for walking and driving both is really risky for no reason, so I generally just take transport, and travel with others. I can't really help, but I will say if you approach life just being prepared for louder sounds and understanding most are there for your safety, or because of natural ongoing events, or because you want them to be, you can start to have better days. I can say that I am no longer afraid of karaoke machines, or computers, but sound played a large part in my eventual love of horror. Especially supernatural horror.

I have ROP and the creepy thing is the visual hallucinations I have sometimes. One of the worst was at work. A giant spider rushing up an escalator and running past me. What the f\*ck!

Honestly and truthfully nothing.

Acoustically dead spaces. I don't like rooms with too little reverb. I went to the UK once. It took me a day or two to get used to sounds reverberating ever so slightly less than what I'm used to.

I used to get excited over severe thunderstorms. Nowadays, they freak me out to the point of having a panic attack.
