COVID testing accessibility for visually impaired people (self.Blind)
submitted by Imaginary_Avo_16
Hey guys! Am doing research on how we can improve accessibility for visually impaired people in doing covid testing can make it easier for them to perform tests with the least assistance possible. Can someone connect me to a person with vision disabilities to have a conversation about how they are getting by during these difficult times? I appreciate your comments and feedback as well

You know we’re all blind on here, right? So we all have vision disabilities.

What are you thinking about for accessibility when it comes to covid tests?

So as you know it's difficult to drive to a testing center for getting a covid test done but at the same time, public transportation is not a safe choice as you increase your chances of getting affected by the virus. Home tests these days are reliable but have to be precisely performed which makes it difficult and inaccessible with limited vision. So I wanted to know how are tests being performed and how can we improve it and make it at least comfortable to get tested without being more exposed or putting yourself at greater risk.

P.S: Am trying to learn more and am extremely sorry if at any point I have offended anyone. I'll try my best to learn more without hurting anyone.

It’s okay, but blind people have been using technology for years.

Covid tests are doable, they’re a bit uncomfortable, but they’re doable.

The only issue is knowing if it’s positive or negative.

Thank you for your feedback! I appreciate your input. Do you think a triggering sound system can be helpful which can indicate a negative or a positive result? Or Do you think any physical signs can be helpful to indicate the test result? Can you give me an idea of how long does it take to perform the test?

Oh and no problme!

It took me about, I'd say 30 to 60 seconds.

Yes I think a sound would be great! I think the words posative and negative would be nice.

As someone who can’t hear for crap either, I’d like a pop up button. 2 popped buttons equals positive, one popped up button equals negative. Pregnancy tests have the same problem. Got to be able to see the lines to 1-know the test worked properly and 2-tell whether you have a positive or negative result.

Thank you so much! honestly am glad I got to know your input and how it can be made easier. It does a lot of help if there are guidelines available in braille. Am guessing they are not inclusive?

To be totally honest, Braille instructions wouldn’t be terribly helpful. The print instructions are fine for all of us that know how to use a smart phone; although a QR code that links to a screen reader friendly set of web instructions would be pretty cool. It’s literally telling the results (in an at home test) that is the issue. Before at home tests, Covid testing in my city was done entirely by drive through pharmacies. As you noted, blind people don’t drive and walk up service is denied. Additionally, when I did have Covid, I was in no shape to be walking to the pharmacy even if they would have tested me. Thankfully I was able to avoid the illness until after at home tests were available and still have just enough useful vision to read them. We have apps that can contact a volunteer to read these for us, but especially in the case of pregnancy test, some things you don’t want to share with others so a tactile way to get the results would be ideal.

Could you put it through some machine, it tests the result and then it speaks out the result through tts?
