I am legally blind and colorblind. I don't know what color my eyes are. My mom always said blue and my husband says green. What color are they? (i.redd.it)

It amazes me people still ask this these days. You can be legally blind and still read. There is different degrees of blindness. I cannot read small print. I increase font size and contrast and I use magnification. What i can see also relies heavily on lighting because I am extremely light sensitive. For example, if I am outside when it's sunny, I am almost completely blind without my sunglasses and I would not be able to read this with my eyes, but even then there are accessibility features that could read it to me. I have Optic Nerve Hypoplasia which means my optic nerve is under developed. Think how a baby sees. I can see things, just not how I'm supposed to. I am a college graduate and have a job working on the computer where i use accessibility settings and a large monitor. I am visually impaired, not non-functioning. In fact, most people who meet me don't even know until I tell them. It confuses a lot of people when the blind are able to adapt.

Not OP, but probably a screen reader. There is even a subreddit for blind redditors.
MostlyBlindGamer 10 points 1y ago
Or magnification. This is that sub. The Redditor you replied to is hopelessly lost, apparently.
Mamamagpie 34 points 1y ago
Very much like my own. I bet if you wear green, people say green. On very overcast days, they might even say grey.

From Wikipedia:

The appearance of blue and green, as well as hazel eyes, results from the Tyndall scattering of light in the stroma, a phenomenon similar to that which accounts for the blueness of the sky called Rayleigh scattering. Neither blue nor green pigments are ever present in the human iris or ocular fluid. Eye color is thus an instance of structural color and varies depending on the lighting conditions, especially for lighter-colored eyes.

It all comes down to light.
Next-Advice9252 [OP] 8 points 1y ago
So what do you put on your ID or passport? What should i put?
Mamamagpie 11 points 1y ago
I have used blue and grey at different times.
thumpetto007 3 points 1y ago
Adding to this...color perception is both psychological AND structural, so really there is no way, other than white balancing the light source on your eyes, and using a specially calibrated color sensor to interperet the many colors "present" in irises...and even then, its millions of color categories have been programmed by humans...so

Women on average see much more color than men, they have very near zero statistical color deficiencies, and female genes (i forget the technical term) are the only ones that can mutate to create tri- and tetrachromism (seeing far mor than average number of colors)
Mamamagpie 3 points 1y ago
It is also linguistic.

Absolutely striking dark grey-blue! They stand out so well against your complexion I almost thought they weren't real for a second :)
CynicalKiddo 11 points 1y ago
Agreed. They are stunning, both the shape and color. There is also a dark sage green-grey starting at the then center of your iris’ and almost streaking through the outer dark grey-blue.
Next-Advice9252 [OP] 3 points 1y ago
Ooo thank you so much!
Next-Advice9252 [OP] 4 points 1y ago
Oh wow thank you so much!!
[deleted] 20 points 1y ago
Your eyes are beautiful.
They are quite an open almond shape, with very little blood vessels noticeable.

The color itself is a deep cool grey which creates a strong contrast with the white of your eyes.
You have a thin ring eye around the iris where the grey is darker which accentuates even more the contrast, it is called a limbal ring.

The color have lighter shades near the pupil which probably gives this blue or green hue depending on light.

Stunning really.
Next-Advice9252 [OP] 3 points 1y ago
Wow this is the best description yet!! You are very kind, thank you so much ❤

You're welcome, I work in accessibility.

It's my job to find how to translate as much information as possible in alternative ways. Nothing makes me happier than when I achieve it. So thank you for the feedback.

Traveler3141 18 points 1y ago
Your mom is sweet.

Your husband is kind.

Your eyes are grey.
anarcap 11 points 1y ago
Eye color shades change with lighting.

Some people have very blue eyes, some have very green.

Your eye color is a grey color that could be either blueish or greenish depending on the day.

So both your mom and your husband are correct.
henriettagriff 8 points 1y ago
Photo of a person's eyes and the bridge of their nose.

The eyes are a dark grey-blue.

Gray / Blue to me.
AllHarlowsEve 8 points 1y ago
A lot of us with blue-green eyes can have them look completely different in pictures, which makes it hard to say for sure. There are pictures of me with ice blue, pale grey blue, light blue, greenish blue, up to straight up green eyes depending on the light, the angle, my makeup, etc.
hither_spin 7 points 1y ago
Your eyes are so beautiful. If I were to paint them I'd use Payne's Grey, a blue-grey color. I bet they reflect the color of your surroundings and what you're wearing too.
Next-Advice9252 [OP] 4 points 1y ago
Love hearing from an artist's perspective. Thank you!
jesuswasalich 7 points 1y ago
Oh my God. Your eyes are so beautiful. Reminds me of the bluish gray of the sky during a full moon.
Next-Advice9252 [OP] 6 points 1y ago
This is SUCH a nice compliment, thank you so much. A full moon is truly beautiful.
BaylisAscaris 6 points 1y ago
Dark grey and they look very pretty. I have never seen that exact color before and it's really cool. The outside edge of the iris is so dark it is almost black, and the center near the pupil has lighter grey radiating outwards and mixing with other colors to reach the edges. I see possible hints of very faint speckles of amber and speckles of very light blue, but the overall color is grey.
Next-Advice9252 [OP] 3 points 1y ago
Thank you so much! This is the first one mentioning amber! So interesting learning the colors in my own eyes
BaylisAscaris 5 points 1y ago
People's eyes tend to be more blue when they are younger and get slightly more amber as they get older. It's possible your eyes used to be more blue, are more grey now, and will look more green or more amber in the future. Anyways, your eyes are super neat and I'm a bit envious.
Next-Advice9252 [OP] 3 points 1y ago
This is so interesting!!

I have never seen this eye color before. They look gray, devoid of color. Stunningly beautiful.

I appreciate you!!
PrincessDie123 5 points 1y ago
They look pretty gray to me with a hint of blue but with some eyes the color can change a bit throughout the day or depending on what you’re wearing. My eyes are hazel but look more green if I’m wearing a little red but people often think they are brown too.

I'd say a green. Maybe a dark emerald. I'm also color blind so idk if I'm the best one to answer.

Thanks for trying!

Dark grey with light grey streaks.
Vwave 4 points 1y ago
Hazel. I am also color blind and experienced the exact same scenario.
Ill-Imagination9406 3 points 1y ago
From the picture I would say black or dark grey, maybe black with grey around the pupil. This probably changes with the light through.
Historical-Young-464 3 points 1y ago
Gray! Hints and undertones of blue in there too!

I just wrote truth, but still I'll happily accept your thanks
MyOther_UN_is_Clever 3 points 1y ago
They are both correct. From a website:

Gray eyes may be called “blue” at first glance, but they tend to have flecks of gold and brown. And they may appear to “change color” from gray to blue to green depending on clothing, lighting, and mood (which may change the size of the pupil, compressing the colors of the iris).

Link: https://www.edow.com/general-eye-care/eyecolor/

On a related note, I used to have severe astigmatism. This is when the lens is misshapen. Without my glasses on, I got the lowest score possible on an eye exam. I later had something like Lasik done, but it was actually a laser eye surgery called PRK. Before PRK, my eyes were a vivid blue color. Since the PRK changed how light passes through the lens of my eye so much, my eyes changed to a darker greenish color!
Next-Advice9252 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Thank you for the sourse! I'm so curious about lasik. I have extreme light sensitivity and that would be very helpful but since it is cause by an under developed optic nerve in the brain, I'm not sure if it would help.
MyOther_UN_is_Clever 2 points 1y ago
Have you talked with a doctor about this? I am NOT one, but your comment made me curious and so I did some brief searching on the internet, and there's a few things that are mentioned.

1. Have you had the pressure in your eyes checked? I don't think this is something often done unless a person goes to an eye-doctor to get glasses. I believe the test is a machine that puffs a bit of air at your eyes, if you know which one I'm talking about.

2. Astigmatism can be measured by a machine that maps the surface of your eyes. I do not know if there is any way to predict if your eyes will change color. From my understanding, what happened to me is rare. I was also like in the .1% worst cases of astigmatism.

3. I do not know if it would help, but there is surgery to replace your lens with an artificial one. This is something you would probably have to speak to a specialist about.

Before you do anything to change your eye color, you will want to have a frank discussion with your husband about it. Eyes can be a very important feature to *certain* people, like the quote "Eyes are the windows to the soul." Feelings are also difficult, and it would be much better for him to know and expect a change, then for it to come as a shock. I would also speak to friends and family. However, ultimately it is YOUR choice, so make it clear you are not seeking their opinion, you are informing them of what is happening.
Next-Advice9252 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Yes, I've had the air puff test. They didn't say much about it. Every doctor has told me vision is non correctable unfortunately.
MyOther_UN_is_Clever 2 points 1y ago
I wasn't speaking of correcting your vision, just of lessening the photophobia. It sounds like high pressure can make photophobia worse. If it's been many years, I'd have it done again, just in case.

The artificial lens may also help reduce the light entering your eye and causing pain. If you have insurance, I'd ask your doctor about getting a reference to an eye surgery specialist and make sure the specialist knows you're wanting to lessen the photophobia pain.
Domovae 3 points 1y ago
Your eyes really are stunning. Such an uncommon color. Overall, I would call the color slate blue. Gray-blue, yes, but *slate* blue better notes the darker hue of the gray, in my opinion.
Next-Advice9252 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Thank you! I appreciate that!

Why does it matter at the end of the day?
Next-Advice9252 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Why would somebody not be curious about their own eye color? Weird question
TechnicalPragmatist 0 points 1y ago
I could ask just the opposite? Seems pretty trivial.
Next-Advice9252 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
I don't know that I'd call something that is an identifier trivial. They ask for eye color on IDs/passports. I would say you're in the minority calling me trivial for wanting to know
TechnicalPragmatist 0 points 1y ago
Is that the reason you want to know?
