There are places to learn braille for free, as another commenter mentioned! You can absolutely teach yourself.

Also, you can mail braille material for free if you are in the US. Just put the address and return address as you normally would, and put "free matter for the blind" where you would put a stamp, and drop it off at the post office or stick it in with your regular mail.

this link has the details/fine print on the USPS free matter for the blind: https://about.usps.com/publications/pub347/pub347\_v03\_revision\_102015.htm#:\~:text=Persons%20who%20are%20not%20considered,eligible%20to%20receive%20free%20matter.

As others have mentioned, learning braille is free — learning any kind of writing system or language can be free, really.

But if you still intend to gift these away, it mith be better if you actually told us which books these are. Sure, there's images, but given that most of your audience can't see them ... ;)

Where?

Online through the Hadley Institute look at hadley.edu.

Thanks for the information... I did not know about it.

I’ve been hearing complaints that the Hadley courses are more geared toward a sighted audience. Just a heads up, in case you run into issues.

Check with a school for the blind in your state, or a neighboring one. They might know more about resources specific to your area and/or online.

If you’re in the US, you can probably send them as $1. Then no one will have to pay for shipping.

If you can find a course for learning braille, I would start there. Learning by just exploring a braille text is going to be very difficult. Braille is most often “contracted”, which means the braille in the book isn’t going to have 1 braille character for every 1 print character. You’ll often have one braille character representing several print characters, and that will make it hard to figure out without guidance. Good luck!

Shipping materials for the blind is also free, if you are in the U.S. I’ve done it myself; you don’t have to be a company or a government organization to do so.

But check online about the process, and whether you need to write anything on the envelope. And if you find out some significant and unexpected exception, please reply!
