Focus 40 Question: How do I get rid of the first four cells that always display the same thing when I’m reading text? (self.Blind)
submitted by PumpkinPieHedgehog
Sorry, I tried to read through the manual and can’t find anything on this. When I’m reading text, the first four Braille cells always show the same thing— and even though it’s set to display in UEB Braille, I don’t know what it says. It looks like a dropped “with” contraction, two dropped V’s and a P.

It throws me off when I’m trying to speed read text and I was wondering if there was some way I could get rid of them?

Thank you. I hope you’re staying warm and safe out there.

What I think you might be seeing are status cells, they generally tell you what kind of component your screen reader is focused on. See if that's the case; you can move them around and turn them off in JAWS and I'm pretty sure they can be disabled in NVDA, as well.
If that is not what you're seeing, I'm afraid the next thought I'm having is that those cells are stuck. If that's the case the unit might need servicing.

They are status cells and can be disabled in the JAWS Settings Center.

Thanks! I’ll look around the jaws settings tomorrow and try to see if I find it in there. I really appreciate it.

1. Press JAWSKEY+6 on the numbers row to open Settings Center.

2. Press CTRL+SHIFT+D to modify the default file.

3. Type the word "status" without the quotes.

4. Press DOWN ARROW until you reach the option for showing status cells.

5. Press the SPACEBAR until you reach the off" setting.

6. Press TAB until you reach the OK button and press SPACE to activate it.
