Designing a baby monitor and would appreciate insights from blind parents (self.Blind)
submitted by Tom-Vu
Hi, I’m a uni student and I've been given a brief to create a baby monitor.

As part of my design ethos. I've opted to follow an inclusive design route. Hoping to make my design monitor with a blind parent as my primary user. So that the final product may be universally accessible by all. Rather than developing a product and retroactively making it accessible.

If anyone may be able to offer some insight, knowledge, or their own opinions on my design and research it would be much appreciated. Even more, if I could design my product with a client to exactly their needs and wants. That would be greatly appreciated. I'm in London myself

This is my first post to this subreddit. I hope I've followed all the rules and this stays up.

I'd imagine if it incorporates a camera something that allows them to be able to frame the crib and center it alone would be useful as well as the camera being able to read and then voice any unordinay movements the baby makes, I think that possibly for the centering of the camera you could perhaps use four stickers placed on the four corners of the crib that the camera utilizes and ether automatically adjusts to center or voices that a corner is out of screen

If I was to develop a pure audio feedback unit? What immediate needs pop to mind. In the case a user was deaf I might research into a stimulus. Philips hue allow for a lot of open source alerts and connections

I could imagine that while running it being silent could be a problem either implementing a static like sound while disconnected from the other device or another mechanism that allows for people to know that it needs attention, perhaps a similar thing for low battery, flashing lights could be used for a similar purpose for deaf people, perhaps also you could allow it to be able to connect to a phone for a voice to text like log for deaf people if you go audio only

Hi thank you for getting back to me, I did some secondary research. There’s a product that uses a blanket you wrap around the baby. On the blanket is a series of shapes. A camera reads the shape to monitor if the baby’s rolled over or not. It’s a great idea but one that’s been made a few times over.

Audible responses to buttons, audible menu and settings navigation.

Thank you, I’ll do some research into how current baby monitors do it well and see where I could transfer it to mine

Bigger is better. Well defined larger buttons with appropiate signs that are tactile enough to be read a la braille. If battery powered, simple battery door with easy to replace batteries. If using a plugpack or wall wart, then consideration of length of wiring.

Wireless monitors too must be easy to use. Big buttons with easy to read signs. Battery replacement must be easy, too.

My wife is blind. Just look at microwave ovens. Lack of accessibilty should be your first reference point.

Thank you so much. I haven’t started designing yet. I’m gathering all the insights I can. And that’s definitely helpful.

Would it be ok if I messaged you for any more insights you might have?

Yes. Message any time.

As a side point. Have a look at the early Rega CD players. Large shaped buttons with raised tactile outlines. A pity they moved away from this design.

Just had a look, this is a great example of tactile buttons . Thank you

Maybe go for clear tactile shapes instead of braille, as a lot of people in this community don’t use braille

Ah thank you that’s another great insight,
Would it be ok to ask you more as my ideas develop?

Because it received multiple responses before action was taken I am leaving it. OP - 1 Warning! Next is ban from sub for 90 days. Please read rules!
