what specific hardware or software for the blind do you use in daily life?(self.Blind)
submitted by JudgeSavings
so, i am blind, and have been my entire life, but i dont really know much about what there is for blind people. I know about jaws and nvda and voice over, but that is really about it.

Low vision my whole life: Use large text on computer and smartphone on daily basis. Use voiceover for long documents/articles as my reading speed is slow. The magnifier on the iPhone has been revolutionary in daily life, I’m able to read menus, item prices on upper and floor-level shelves at the store etc.

Braille screen input on my phone for writing this.
JudgeSavings [OP]1 points1y ago
i planned on ptractising it, and probably should
DHamlinMusic2 points1y ago
Now that I know what you meant…
Yeah, I find it very useful for typing, I do not read braille that well yet, just started reading my first book. But it is so much faster and more accurate than relying on VTT for writing on my phone.
JudgeSavings [OP]2 points1y ago
it probably will be
DHamlinMusic1 points1y ago
No idea what that is sorry.
Guimple2 points1y ago
He said he planned on practicing it. It was misspelled, so your screen reader probably read it in a weird way.
DHamlinMusic3 points1y ago
Yeah, now that you say that it makes complete sense.

* Braille display is a good one if you can read Braille. Various GPS and camera-based apps on iOS are part of my daily toolkit too.
* Talking kitchen scale, although I'd like a bluetooth one for better accuracy.
* Have a cheap but serviceable Bluetooth bathroom scale.
* Good set of magnetic screwdrivers, an audible fuse tester (made it myself in high school 2 decades ago,it still works). tactile measuring tape.
Alongside screen reading software, I use a Focus 14 Braille display. I will, hopefully, be getting a Brailliant 40-cell display, because the 14 is too small to read with and I want the extra almost-notetaker functionality. I, personally, don't see the point of getting a fully-fledged Braille notetaker, but I would love to hear other people's experiences with them. I also have a Braille labeller.

Ooh forgot to mention my labeller.
Still use that quite a bit in the kitchen for all those jars of spices and such.

I’ve used it for gifts and labelling shampoo and conditioner bottles. Can’t wait until I move out and use it to label food

sounds pretty helpfull

* A white cane * I've set my phone up to read text messages aloud to me * My laptop is zoomed to 225%, and I use CTRL + to increase the magnification of web pages when needed * I told my mom her spelling needed to improve because my phone couldn't read what she was texting to me. Not really a software or hardware, more of a life hack

So I use a Victor reader trek I used the victory the stream in the past and it is almost like the trek minus the GPS functionality. I use many blindness applications including Seeing AI be My Eyes how old are you approximately
CosmicBunny971 points1y ago
What do you use the Victor Reader Trek for? I'm thinking of getting the Stream to use like an iPod but also to store books and such, though I don't know if it's a stupid idea.
Bachelor-pad-721 points1y ago
Hey, are use the Victor trek to record my lectures, some in person and some on zoom. Are use it to download book share books, I love reading books share books on it because you can go through paragraph by paragraph or sentence by sentence in addition to a few other options and just playing a text file through without the need to press a button to advance. I navigate text files I place on the player as well, usually documents from school. For example I have all of my syllabus in one folder that I can quickly navigate to and then I have all the other four courses I’m taking in their own folders So I created an efficient way to organize my school stuff and access them on the Reader
And now with the trek part I can walk around a little bit or turn it on while I am being driven around and know exactly where I am. I also find the ability to virtually and navigate with the arrow keys an amazingly helpful tool
CosmicBunny971 points1y ago
Oh wow, it seems really convenient. My classes are recorded and put online, but I love what you do with the syllabus. How does the GPS compare to apps on your phone if you have any experience with that?
Bachelor-pad-721 points1y ago
Yes it’s quite useful I keep it with me all the time. I haven’t used it outside alone enough to say. I’ve used iPhone GPS apps extensively so I will be able to compare it once I’m able to get out. Probably near the end of this month the snow will start clearing up and I will be out by myself more often I’m not sure if I said in my previous reply, I love the way using the GPS on the Victor reader trek works. I am able to ero around city block by city block and hear the name of the streets and distance red. It’s so nice before going to a location to be able to do that. It feels like we are getting closer and closer to be able to use maps as effectively and efficiently as cited people do
