Normally I wouldn't do this, but $350 entices me to bend the rules (self.Blind)
submitted by OldManOnFire
u/CalmPermission6723 is offering a $350 Amazon gift cart to interview blind or visually impaired web developers.

Yes, I know we have a separate survey thread for that, but that thread expires in 24 hours and a new weekly survey thread will take its place. His post won't get much attention. And I've never seen compensation that high for an interview before.

If you're a developer and could use extra cash message this guy and set up an interview. I would do it myself except I'm not a developer.

Doesn’t that seem a little high to you? Like scammy high???

Excellent question.

I do a couple interviews a week on average for $10, $20, and if I'm lucky, $50 compensation.

So yeah, $350 is definitely an outlier.

I always take the survey or do the interview prior to upvoting the post. I'm a little older and maybe a bit more experienced at this kind of thing than many people on r/Blind. I don't want to upvote any interview opportunity until I've tried it myself. I'm not going to recommend a scam to my friends.

However, u/CalmPermissions6723 is creating tools for developers and wants to interview blind people who know how developer tools work. I don't have a clue. I'm not even close to qualified to be an interview subject on this topic.

I'm drawing attention to his request because $350 is a lot of money. I think some of us could really use it. But I can't vouch for it because I haven't done it.

To anybody considering this, be smart. Don't give your bank account number or Amazon password to him so he can send you the promised $350.

And I'm currently doing a study that bought me a fitbit charge 5 and will pay $75 on top of that after. So more than $200 in total "compensation"

I've done things with $300 compensation but it was things like training AI to recognize mobility devices in photos by sending them 30 photos of myself with different backgrounds, hairstyles, etc with my mobility aids.

Sounds scammy for sure.

I messaged this person and didn’t get a response.

I’m not saying you won’t, but I haven’t.

I did get a reply, but they're only looking for people who have low vision and still use their vision for coding. So for those who are totally blind like me, this is probably not going to work.

Ah… they might have mentioned visually impaired, but I forgot.

It could be a scam, but developers make good money, so they would ignore anything smaller, I guess, and the pool of blind developers this person can reach is also pretty small, so the total amount paid for this study or whatever likely won't be too bad. I took part in a study looking at VR and VI peeps, and they gave me a quest 2, a laptop, and about $200 :-)
