Sounds like you will have to change some part of your setup:
1. Try using NVDA rather than JAWS. I've found it to be generally faster, but especially with NVDA, and personally far prefer its features (not about to get into a screen reader war, though). https://www.nvaccess.org/
2. Switch to a different mail provider. Gmail is just damn laggy for me regardless of the setup, and besides, is awful for privacy. I recommend Protonmail; private, accessible and simple to use. https://protonmail.com/
3. Give it an attempt wit ha different browser. Please, not Google Chrome. Brave is also Chromium, and gives you all the same good features, without so many bad ones. https://brave.com/

Protonmail is payware though isn't it?

I've been using a free account for several years now and have never lacked any features — although I do plan to upgrade soon, just to support the company. You'd mainly want to pay if you wanted more space (just clean your inbox more often) or if you wanted the bridge that allows you to use Protonmail with email clients.

Look, they have to make money somewhere. Would you rather it be from selling your data to advertisers and who knows who else? Google has spoiled us into thinking that we can have good quality services for "free", but you know what they say about free lunches — there ain't no such thing!

Ah I was under the impression you had to pay to use the service at all. I have no problem paying for extra features.

Ah, no. They do have a free version with I think 500 MB of space. They recently offered an upgrade to 1 GB for anyone who downloaded their mobile apps, so perhaps they will do something like it in the future as well.

Try a different browser like chrome?

Could it be a fluke? Did you restart jaws or firefox? Did you turn off the computer then turn it back on. Did any of these help?
