Emigrating from USA to Australia., as a blind person. (self.Blind)
submitted by [deleted]
So my girlfriend lives down in Australia, and for various reasons, cannot move up here. I, on the other hand, have no attachments here in the USA. I have no offline friends, no family, and I live in a cheap apartment. So it makes more practical sense for me to go down there.

I am also totally blind. And I know a lot of countries don't like those with disabilities emigrating to them. So I'm trying to get some certifications to make myself look a little more attractive, to show that I won't be coming down there to leech.

I was thinking about picking up stuff like assistive technology specialist certs, some web development certs, stuff like that. Are there any blind Australians who can give me recommendations for companies that I might approach for a work sponsorship? This whole process is totally new for me.

Not being a smart ass, start with blind organisations. They hire blind and VI people and they may or may not be able to help you find other companies who do/will hire blind/VP or make tech for blind/vi.You haven't said which state or territory, so I've broken them down into the states and territories in each chunk of the country. These are also organisations that can help you with O&M for your new community.

Eastern Aus:
QLD-The Queensland Blind Association, Guide Dogs Queensland
NSW-Vision Australia, Guide Dogs NSW/ACT
ACT-Guide Dogs NSW/ACT
VIC-Statewide Vision Resource
TAS-VisAbility Tasmania, Guide Dogs Tasmania

Central Aus:S
A-The Royal Society of the Blind, Guide Dogs SA/NT
NT-Guide Dogs SA/NT
QLD-The Queensland Blind Association, Guide Dogs Queensland

Western Aus:
WA-Association for the Blind of Western Australia, VisAbility WA

If it helps, the braille language we use here is United English Braille (UEB). If you aren't familiar, you can learn it for free before you even come here at $1 \- they have grade 1 UEB, grade 2 UEB, maths, advanced maths, and maths extension.

Oh, thanks. I hadn't even considered blind organizations. It will be South Australia. Much appreciated!

I live in Adelaide and have sent you a PM. Happy to discuss/field questions.

Have fun down there. Never been but I hear it's nice.

Seems like it. I was originally considering New Zealand (i've been kicking around the idea of leaving USA for a couple of years now), but then this girl came along and the rest is history.

Not to be a bother bro but really am curious in case I ever go blind. How are you able to type and respond ? It’s pretty cool.

Assistive tech so a screen reader. It reads everything on the screen that you can see to me. And it verbalizes keys I type and press or in certain cases just the words. But if it’s an on screen keyboard it will tell you what key your finger is on. What you touch on a iphone will be read.

On the iphone it’s called voice over on windows jaws and vda. On mac it’s also voice over. On chromebooks it’s chromevox. On linux the accessible ones it’s orca, on android it’s talkback

the biggest thing is, make sure you're sellable. What makes you worth giving citizenship to? how can you contribute to the society and the community here.

That's the sad but true part. If you're disabled, you have to prove you won't "burden the system"-ew.

Sell yourself like pancakes on the weekend.

yeah I've personally not seen anyone have issues with blind people here. there are a few people near my street and most people are courteous to them. at shops most people are helpful or friendly. you shouldn't have any issues in that regard and if you did, its because that specific person sucks.i would suggest bringing accessibility tools though because I'm not sure how easy it'd be to get them here. it wouldn't be impossible though

Oh yeah I plan on mailing my equipment down there. Along with my guitars and such. That's going to be fun lol.

Yeah just a leetle bit of a blow to the ol pocketbook. I think by next spring (your winter) I will be able to afford it though :)
