Navigation App (self.Blind)
submitted by saphirblau2512
Hello guys! Maybe one of you knows a good (maybe not too expensive) Android app for navigation. Mostly I have struggle with the direction. (if I have to turn left or right). I tried some Apps, but I could not find one for me. Note that I live in Europe, so maybe some Apps are more better for the US.
Greetings.

Good luck with that. A while ago, I tried to find a good app for navigation for android myself. But, to my knowledge, there is simply nothing on the level of soundscape or blind square.

How much information do you need, and what is your skill level for travelling? Google maps works pretty well (at least in North America), but you would still need to have decent cane skills to travel along the sidewalk, cross streets, etc.

Blind square is hit and miss. It is designed to be more friendly for someone who is blind, but it can be difficult to use, and the high cost is a bit of a barrier.

Soundscape was not originally designed as a navigation aide, it was originally designed to tell people what was around them. While some people have adapted it for navigation, there are certain issues with that. Its accuracy is also a problem sometimes. I've had Soundscape tell me I was coming up to an intersection, when I was already in the middle of the intersection.

Mostly I need help with the direction. If I open maps and start a route, I have no idea in which direction I have to go and it is not accurate enough to understand in which street I have to go. Especially in bigger cities, because there are streats not more than 10 meters away from the other. I think you know what I mean. Walking on the sidewalks or crossing streats is no issue for me. Sadly the apps you mentioned are not available on Android.

Try Lazarillo. That is a GPS designed for the blind and popular with some of my clients. It is available on Android.
