What should I disclose/change for our new partially blind employee? (self.Blind)
submitted by Exact_Quote4264
Hi all!

I work in HR and we have a new employee joining us who is blind in one eye.
I’d like to make sure we’re supporting this as much as possible, but I don’t have all the information as to what that might be.
I don’t plan to disclose the new employee’s disability - but what do you expect to be a need? We’re a startup so don’t have everything set up already.

It might be nothing, and I’ll ask them as well what they want, but I’d rather not ask “the stupid” questions.
Thank youuu 🥰

The very fact you're taking time to ask us here in r/Blind proves you won't be asking the stupid questions.

Just relax and be honest about your lack of understanding about your new employee's needs. The stupid questions are the ones which arise through misconceptions. Every other question about our blindness is honest.

It makes me happy knowing you care enough about your new employee to ask.

I would just ask them. I'm blind in one eye and don't need anything but everyone is different. As long as you ask respectfully, they shouldn't have a problem with you inquiring.

I think it is great that your company is being so proactive. I'd let the employee request the accommodations he needs. Maybe just check with him during onboarding with something like, "If there's anything you need, let us know.".

I think the best question to ask your new employee is, "How can I support you in job and career success?" :-D Then have a good conversation.

I think like the other commenter said, telling them that you don't have the experience to anticipate their needs but you are absolutely there to help make any changes will be a good start.

You said you work in HR so I'm assuming you guys are in a office/cubicle setting, if you guys have assigned desks or work areas maybe you could make it so that the spot they will be working at has the most ease of access, i.e. make sure there aren't unnecessary obstacles, that they are not set up in a particularly awkward or high traffic area, etc.

The new employee is definitely the best person to ask about what they need. You can also look at the job accommodation network for more information. https://askjan.org/

Talk to them first. I can tell you the biggest impact with having just one eye is depth perception. I grew up with a family friend who had one glass eye. Depth perception was her only complaint but everyone is different.

You may have an agency or commission in your area to help. Here, Buffalo NY USA, there is a NYS Commission for the Blind. If your employee is legally blind they can open a case, NYSCB will come in directly or (assign the case to not for profit agency) and help with "job save". They will help with orientation and mobility, lighting, magnification, software enhancements, all at no cost to help your company and your employee adapt to each other.

Yeah, asking them directly is best. I hope everything is working out there.
