Now that the BaconReader developers have flushed accessibility down the toilet, what iOS Reddit client are you all using?(self.Blind)
submitted by GoneVision
I had happily used BaconReader to post and read Reddit content for the past few years. However, as of an update, perhaps three updates ago, the developers completely broke accessibility. I’ve given them a bit to realize The error of their ways, LOL, but accessibility issues have not yet been addressed. So, that brings me to my question, What other iOS Reddit clients are you all using?

I would highly suggest Apollo. Developer is open to fixing any accessibility related bugs. It’s honestly one of the most accessible apps that I have used with voiceover.

I’ve been using Dystopia for quite a while, what makes Apollo better in your opinion? Or have you not used dystopia?
Individual-Fan16391 points1y ago
I already have made a new thread about this, but I just wanted to say thank you for mentioning dystopia! I thought that Apollo was the most accessible app to use, but dystopia takes that award hands-down.
bradley221 points1y ago
No problem!

Nope, it’s iOS only.

Writing this reply on Apollo myself. Love it so far. There are a few quirks like on the subreddit subscription add page where the search results are, but that’s really the only issue I have with it at all at this point.
Individual-Fan16391 points1y ago
What issues have you encountered? Did you report to the Apollo sub Reddit?
altgenetics2 points1y ago
Came here to say the same thing. Dystopia is ok, but it’s been in app hospice for a year+ as it was the dev’s side project.
CloudyBeep3 points1y ago
Another vote for Dystopia.

On Android myself but have heard a lot of good things about Apollo, also Dystopia, hope I spelled those correctly.

I use both of these, and both are almost fully accessible.

I’m happily using Dystopia. In fact, it’s so comfortable to use with VoiceOver that when I’m trying to use Reddit from my PC desktop with NVDA it feels like a chore in comparison
retrolental_morose3 points1y ago
you using redditforblind.org on desktop?
synthpopolis1 points1y ago
Nope, just accessing the site with Chrome

Dystopia is technically still in beta so you can’t find it on the App Store. Follow that link to install an iOS app called TestFlight. From there you can access the beta version of Dystopia. Using TestFlight, you will install the Dystopia app to your iOS device and it will then be just like any other app on your home screen. I have quite a bit of experience with Dystopia at this point so let me know if you have any other questions. Enjoy!

I haven't been able to find distopia on the appstore?
synthpopolis1 points1y ago
Yeah, you won’t find it directly. See my reply above to another user with the same question and let me know if you still have any issues
Marconius2 points1y ago
I'm using the latest version of BaconReader and am not having any trouble at all on iOS. What specific issues are you having? Are you part of the developer subreddit?

I have auto updates enabled for iOS, and in this case, that was a mistake. Just about everything is broken for me now. Random strings of garbage characters like this ^yhoabmg52, appear between threads in a sub Reddit, while flicking through the posts.Screens don’t refresh properly, for example when you open up the side bar, the contents of the side bar will appear over top of the sub Reddit content, and both are red when flicking through items with voiceover. Some tabs are no longer labeled. Check boxes in settings do not report the correct state of the checkbox. Just about everything is completely crap on my end, anyway. If you’re still able to use it, I’m happy for you, but it went from a perfectly accessible app, to a heap of useless garbage for me. fortunately, thanks to another poster on here, I just downloaded Apollo, and it seems to be working quite well.

Very wierd, as there hasn't been an update in quite a while. Did VO screen recognition get turned on by any chance?
BlindGuyNW1 points1y ago
I would double check that screen recognition is not on. The behavior you describe sounds very much like it.

baconreader is still working for me. I am posting this right now using it.
TechnicalPragmatist1 points1y ago
What exactly is wrong with bacon reader? I can still use it it works fine.
TechnicalPragmatist1 points1y ago
Have you reported it are they unwilling to take feedback.if they don’t know and there’s no feedback it’s hard to blame them. I have had no problems with bacon reader.

I would suggest dystopia. It is in beta, has been since 2017, but it is the best app since sliced bread. I used to use apollo, but ditched it.
Broken_Peepers1 points1y ago
As others have said, Dystopia is great.
ShadeOfNothing1 points1y ago
I use Dystopia
xmachinaxxx1 points1y ago
Others have already mentioned it but I use Apollo.
