This is great news. I thought Luddite law makers might drag their feet on this.
synthpopolis11 points1y ago
I’m actually shocked by this news, but in a good way. Daddy needs a google car lol. *rubs hands together in excited anticipation*

I don't think it's about them being luddites, but something like this has to be exceptionally safe before we let computers take over. It's not just about a computer being able to drive a car from A-B, but also being able to compensate for the actions of other human drivers on the road.
I can't wait for 100% automated cars to be the norm, as well as being blind I also have severely restricted mobility so can't use public transport, but I'd rather wait until it's safe than be rushed.
TechnicalPragmatist1 points1y ago
Totally agree here.
SoapyRiley6 points1y ago
One step closer to the return of full independence! So exciting!
synthpopolis6 points1y ago
Take my money! Lol. I never thought I would have the luxury of my own vehicle in my lifetime but it seems like that possibility just got a lot closer
ParaNoxx4 points1y ago
Not being able to drive is one of the biggest blows to our independence there is. Lets fucking gooo, progress. We can't count on public transport to be decent, so the next best thing is to wait until hopefully we can use cars, too.
achromatic_032 points1y ago
Yeah and same with paratransit... real trash where I live, sign me up for one of these!
blind_system3 points1y ago
We're still very far away from an actual fully self driving car that you can actually trust.
stas-prze3 points1y ago
Funny how me and my sister were talking about this very thing on saturday. Maybe I won't have to use public transport anymore by the time I turn 18.
TechnicalPragmatist1 points1y ago
It’s probably not that soon hahaha!
SightlessBastard2 points1y ago
OK. I am honestly a bit confused by all these comments here. I mean, I don’t want to be harsh or some thing. But do you seriously think, that we will actually at some point be able to drive our own car? I mean, what would you do, if you’re driving along the highway, and suddenly, something goes wrong with the software, or the hardware brakes? This is technology. And technology is never 100% reliable. Automating things can be good. But there should always be a way, a human can take over. Especially, if it’s about driving a car, where you are not only responsible for yourself, but also for other drivers. Apart from that, I don’t think an insurance will ever take a blind person, due to the increased risk of accidents. I don’t want to torpedo anyone’s dreams here. But I think, you guys are a bit too euphoric about this.
PungentMushrooms2 points1y ago
Getting into a human driven car is one of the most statistically dangerous things we do on a daily basis. Maybe I'm being overly optimistic but I find it hard to believe that they would approve a self-driving car that's less reliable than already fairly unreliable human drivers
TechnicalPragmatist1 points1y ago
Oh I agree with you.
Snoo_854651 points1y ago
I live in San Francisco. In low vision, I watch the autonomous vehicles drive this whole city better than humans. I’m confident about the future ❤️
SightlessBastard1 points1y ago
That might be the case. But you assume, that these cars will always work flawlessly. I mean, always. Every single minute of every single day. The question is, what will you do, if, someday, they won’t work flawlessly? You have some sight left. So for you it might actually be an alternative. But for someone, who has no sight at all, I highly doubt, that this will ever be a possibility. And I haven’t even mentioned the fact, that you would actually still need a drivers license…
Snoo_854651 points1y ago
The reference is: are these better than human drivers? And I would say yes. Because I have been hit by a careless human driver. So even if the robots mess up sometimes they’ll only be used by the public if they mess up way less than humans

At this point, my concern for my own safety is about as high as my concern for what I had for breakfast on the 6th of May 2017.
I'd rather run the risk of ending up in an accident if it means I get my independence, which is absolutely the most important thing in the world for me.
SightlessBastard2 points1y ago
Well, it wouldn’t be just about your own safety. If that thing doesn’t work 100% reliably, you could theoretically run someone over, who just wanted to cross the street. I’m pretty sure, in the far future, when we have actual AI’s, we could be able to own our on cars. But these AI’s would have to be on a level of Kitt from the show knight rider. And that’s some thing we are far, far away from. So far in fact, that none of us will see something like that being used on a daily basis.
je97 [OP]0 points1y ago
The 2017 breakfast applies not just to myself, but to everyone else if I'm honest. I take the same view I did with covid.
TechnicalPragmatist1 points1y ago
Are you not being a bit selfish here?
ukifrit1 points1y ago
I like independence and stuff but I'm not risking people's lives because of it.
guitarandbooks2 points1y ago
Yes! One step closer! Bring it on.
TechnicalPragmatist1 points1y ago
This is interesting but also for me I think I am skeptical. How do I know that I will be safe. How do I know that these cars will not be accident prone? How do we know that we are going to be able to work it ethically.
I am all for it but not at the risks of risks and danger. And it breaking down or worse causing accidents to me or other people.
ke7zum1 points1y ago
I don't really think this will happen in my lifetime. I have this conversation with my students as part of english class and all of us agree it is the infrastructure that has to change first. that will not happen for most of us. It takes money which we don't want to spend on the new infrastructure of self driving AI power cars.
ForceR-13561 points1y ago
Can't wait! Hope it happens sooner rather than later
