Hi, so I’m a incoming college freshman majoring in English and for the time being I’m looking for part time work. I’ve looked at my local libraries closest to me but there aren’t any openings right now.
I also should mention I have optic nerve atrophy with 20/200 vision and wear glasses to sharpen my vision a small bit. Now I’ve talked to a vocational counseler when I was in high school and it seems fast food isn’t really a good option and most jobs require the cashier and their fast paced as well? Any advice. I’ve thought of Chuck E. Cheese, Walmart stocker. Not sure what else.

I’m a dishwasher! I use the time in the back alone to listen to college textbooks and music. r/dishwashers is a good sub for knowing what the work is like

Qith 20/200 you can do a lot of things, I have worked in warehouses as a janitor, I've worked In pet medicine, I've worked as an on site off site mechanic and I am currently a licensed security guard who just made site supervisor. I also contract with the Florida department of education as a job coach, I'm not saying all this to brag but to show you that just because you are visually impaired doesn't mean you shouldn't go out and apply for what interest you.
I'm sure there are programs that would live to have a college freshman working with either data entry clerical or an admin assistant
Put yourself out there, cast you net wide and see what you catch and feel free to PM me if you need advice

Okay! But I’ve had no job experience. I’d ask my vocational counselor but she’s on spring break right now

Could you offer grinds/tutoring to high school English students. Not sure if that's done in the US?
It would be cash in hand. But could get you an income, suit yourself and your vision and you're interested in it. Something to put on a CV/resume later on
Also maybe working a small local diner/cafe
Supermarket customer service desk maybe

Similar acuity, and these were my college/ high school jobs:
- dishwasher - weight room attendant at school gym - campus tour guide - concession stand cashier/coffee maker/stocker - Walgreens cashier - school newspaper cartoonist
Good luck!

What accomadations would they do for cashier? Cashier doesn’t really speak to me. Tbh

Haha, it didn't really speak to me either, but it's a job in customer service, which is a good skill set. I didn't actually need any accommodations. I just looked closer at stuff, used a magnifier when needed, and actually got pretty good at doing math in my head. I did experience the most discrimination at Walgreens, though! Another way to get customer service experience can be call centers and e-chat. Then you just need to be able to zoom in on the screen, and the state will cover the software... although I prefer an apple computer (I have a MacBook as a reasonable accommodation at my current job)

How do I get a job at a echat my local library has one but I don’t know how you get a job doing that
achromatic_033 points1y ago
You can just do a standard search in your area on like Indeed; you might even find something remote. Another type of remote job you could look into is a copywriter, which you can usually do freelance... those you can even find on Craigslist. Or any editing work... figure you could get this kind of work, since you're an English major... you can even create your own ad on CL to say you do freelance editing and proofreading.

One of the things I tell my clients is to sell your willingness to learn, be honest "I don't have much in the way of work experience but I am willing to be trained" most employers like things done there way and if you are willing to allow yourself to be trained you are 3x better than the person who comes in talking like they know everything
What are your hobbies and how can they be tied into the workplace
How can what you are doing in college sell you to an employer
What are your shoet/long term goals
Answer these 3 questions in your interveiws and your sure to have success

I love books, going to art museums, ngl I like reading people work and editing them/ giving feedback. Movies/tv shows

I am just brainstorming. In Canada, oftentimes they have student seasonal jobs available at local museums and tourist places. I live in a more rural area so these attractions are not overly fast-paced. If you like learning and sharing historical information such a job could be enjoyable.
If you enjoy editing and providing constructive feedback, tutoring or reviewing essays for other college students may be an option. Many people enter college/university not having the needed writing skills and can benefit from tutoring.
I cannot think of anything else at this moment. If I do though, I will come back and post. I definitely understand the difficulties of entering the workforce with very little work history. When I first entered the workforce I did not have a disability at the time and found it difficult.
