[USA] Gotta rant... GRRRRRRR!!!! (self.Blind)
submitted by blazblu82
Last time I went to see my specialist it was also my last day of health insurance due to recent job loss. Dr had me fill out a form to get Eyelea for free. However, I didn't find out until today that even though the medication will be free, the procedure will not. They want $600 for a 10 minute procedure. Outside of that, the office visit could run me another $300.

This pisses me off so much. I can't get a break on this crap, just more dirt kicked in my face. I can't even qualify for Medicaid until I'm practically broke. Don't know when or if I'll land another job and I'm 15% into SSDI evaluation.

Can I get a break from this???

My ophthalmologist office signed me up for something called Good Days for my injections because even with insurance, injections are expensive.

It’s a non profit organization that helps pay for qualifying conditions. Maybe they can help you too?

This is the unfortunate part of the American healthcare system.

Eylea for intravitreal injections? Most places have a charity care or something like that that you can fill out an application for. Don’t wait! If you have macular edema the damage compounds by the day. I’m surprised the nurse didn’t direct you to this.

Grene Vision doesn't have charity anything. Just another stupid national chain trying to suck wallets dry. There are only a few drs in the area who do retinal work and most are with Grene Vision. They won't even accept help from Project Access.

I don't want the shots anyways. What's the point of throwing thousands of dollars at an incurable disease? The shots aren't going to fix the damage that's already done. It's already taken my ability to drive and forced me out of an established job. What more can it do? The whole thing just sucks.

To clarify, they did provide forms to get the medication for free. However, the procedure to inject the medication costs $600 plus an office fee upwards of $300. I can't swing that without having a steady income and insurance.

I’m assuming adv dr means advances diabetic retinopathy? 20/60 is still something tho! Don’t give up. And you are right. The shot won’t cure you but they will help preserve what vision you have left and 20/60 is worth fighting for.

Right. The forms called “Eylea for you”. Call around to the other retina specialists to see if a different office has a similar program.

Just because you are blind doesn’t mean you won’t ever get a job maybe for now but learn to adapt and cope and you can work again, doing what you have been doing even maybe. Depends on the field a lot of it is a yes.

I'm not blind, yet. I'm down to partial vision in one eye that has a bunch of stuff going on with it, primarily photophobia.

I was having a bad day when I made my post. I get tired and frustrated explaining my situation over and over to the same people. Plus, I feel discouraged most of the time because I can't go anywhere w/o the lighting environment affecting my vision whether I wear sunglasses or not. Like yesterday, my good eye was so stressed out, anything more than dim lights was too much. I'm going through a transitional phase with my eyes right now and have a hard time believing I can get and hold another job. My last job let me go on terms I didn't agree with because they didn't do anything to help me keep my job; instead, I got the boot with severance pay.

I'm sure I'll get something worked out soon. Thanks!

I am sure you will and if not adjusting and learning new skills will be good.

Sorry about your job but yeah, sometimes it’s tough. I am sure you can get another one at some point.

That's how mine are covered -- a program from a separate charity or philanthropic organization --except for the January ones, to meet my deductible. (They could cut me off at any moment but swear I'll be covered as long as necessary.

Ugh sorry this is happening to you.
TechnicalPragmatist 2 points 1y ago
That sounds bad, sound like they are trying to nickle and dime you. If you can’t aford the medications how can you afford to pay them to inject it? That’s interesting. Sounds like they just want your money. Yes that part being free may help but it doesn’t help enough.

I agree with you 100%. Stupid thing, the shots are covered via the manufacturer at no charge to me, but it's $600 for setup and injection. Shots haven't been on the table until recently and I am not 100% certain they are the correct course of action. They would be used for my left eye, which is only good, and I fear those shots could cause the retina to come off sooner. Dr says she sees tractional and vitreol detachments. That eye also has a coloboma where the retina didn't form completely. Good eye is too sensitive to sit through a laser session anymore and surgery is an absolute last resort. Basically, I'm left with zero options. I can't just find another specialist since I don't have insurance anymore, either.
