Recommendations for solid cane tips? (self.Blind)
submitted by mdizak

The tips of my canes keep breaking off, and I always end up with basically an open ended tent pole for the cane tip. This isn't exactly ideal, and makes wandering around much more uncomfortable because anytime yor cane touches anything it's this hard, rigid stop.

I guess I drag my cane tip on the street here and there, but I don't think a whole lot. No idea if I'm walking correctly or not as I never got any training, and just figured it out.

Regardless, I'm happy to spend extra money on a decent cane. Any suggestions on a good cane with a solid tip that isn't going to break off in a few weeks on me? Should I be looking at those roller balls as tips, or?

Hi, something is not right. Cane tips don’t break off with regular use. Could you inform us when they are breaking off?

the tips of the canes are usually pretty tough, so I would be curious as to why they are breaking. Is the tip shearing off where the hook is, or something else happening?

If you use an Ambutech cane, they made a ceramic tip that is pretty hard-wearing. Although it if it breaking at the hook, the ceramic wouldn't help.

You mentioned you never got any training.... how are you using the cane? You mentioned you drag the cane, but not a lot... are you tapping from side to side (the technique is called two point touch) or is it constantly on the ground as you drag from shoulder to shoulder (the technique is called constant contact)?

Hook? I've had lots of canes now, some of them even gifts, and never had they had a hook on them. Are they supposed to?

It's always just a little plastic cover arond the end of the cane. Not sure where they break, but I'm guessing the small creases / gaps in between the sidewalk bricks. Know what I mean? I'm assuming when it's my cane keeps hitting those, because that's all I can think of.

Yeah, yeah... I generally do that whole two point thing while walking. I do drag it on the grond occasionally though, but not a huge amount, or at least I didn't think so. For example, if I know the ledge of a sidewalk is coming up I will, or if I'm in a tight spot somewhere, that type of thing.

Thanks, I'll buy a couple Ambutech canes with those rollers, and see if that works any better.

Make sure you get the right length, should come to about the top of your armpit.

Under normal circumstances, the hook would be inside the cane. The tip has a hook, which is attached to the elastic cord inside. However, it sounds like your cane's tip uses a sleeve type. They are not as common on North America, but I have seen them occasionally.

Ambutech is very highly regarded.

Also, get training if possible. It's hard to break bad habits, and you might learn some tips.

Yeah that should not be happening. You could look at the Ambitech Graphite Mobility Cane in 6 sections with a high mileage rolling ball or marshmallow.

How do they break they have to be really bad quality ones or something you are doing is terribly wrong. They shouldn’t be doing this.

I really do like the iowa cane or the commander technology canes. Or the dcanes. But yeah. Ambutech is also really good. I like their slimlines.

How is it breaking off? Does the whole tip just come off or is the plastic tip actually breaking?
mdizak [OP] 1 points 1y ago
No, not the whole tip. Just the very bottom layer of plastic, which effectively turns the tip into an open ended tent pole. I'm sure it's just when I keep hitting thise lines / gaps in the sidewalks.

I'll grab a couple Ambutech canes with rollers, thanks. Never knew abot the name Ambutech until this thread, so it helped. :-)
