Let's talk.... (trigger warning) (self.Blind)
submitted by gabby_skii
Hello

Firstly I'd like to give thanks for all the love and support that I've received from my last post. I'm new to the vision impaired community, yet I almost feel ashamed of my ignorance. I've received messages from many scholars and professionals working in my dream felid, and I'm relieved to understand that I'm still capable of achieving all the things I want to (I admit, my rants sound like I'm catastrophising hard).

Hearing all of these amazing stories on this forum, I can't help but think about the infinite amount of blind or vision impaired people out there who may not have access to this kind of support, or much support at all for that matter. Who may be stuck in households riddled with abuse or neglect, who's very real needs aren't being met by those around them. Maybe someone's dependency is being manipulated or used to reinforce negative and untrue connotations. Someone who might need to push the tolerable bounds of their limitations to work or to provide for others (Lord knows these consultation fees and procedures are no joke). Before understanding my situation, I didn't pay any mind to news stories about disability support services and the lack of funding provided to those registered with them (the NDIS comes to mind). I was never able to grasp the impact of that.

Like with any other disease or injury, they're are risk factors. Taking in negative comments or being met with glassy-eyed indifference when expressing your needs only capitalises on the stress you may already be facing. I had read a post that expressed a lot of frustration due to the condescending and outright rude comments made by others. I knew if I was in their situation it would accumulate into shame and embarrassment. I unfortunately have no doubts that this is the reality for some.

I'm not too sure if there are spaces where situations like this are being discussed, I guess this just got me thinking about all the other strains someone may face and how their environment impacts their view of their condition. If you can relate to anything here, I'll be thinking about you today.

The founder of this subreddit, u/rumster, is a fierce advocate for the blind. He stands up for us better than we sometimes do for ourselves. I've watched him chase down colleges and universities who offered compensated surveys then didn't pay on time. He's done much bigger actions on our behalf than that, but I'll leave those stories for him to tell.

It's comforting to know good people are fighting for us.

I had no idea, but nevertheless that sounds amazing. Props to them, I know that goes a long way

thank you sir. I just spent a whole week at CSUN trying to learn as much as I could. Heading back to Chicago tomorrow and back to the grind on monday. Can't wait to tell you some of the big things that I got coming to this place and the gamers sub.

This sub is very supportive and if not please let me know how I could help. This goes to you and everyone else on here. I'm not sure why you got down voted either.

Oh I did? I didn't even notice (I'm still working my way around reddit). Not to sure why either, would love to know too haha

There are without doubt people whose weaknesses are being used against them, but I don't know of any places where this is being discussed.

Maybe I'm not so smart, but what is the trigger warning for? Nothing in the post is triggering.
gabby_skii [OP] 3 points 1y ago
Not gonna lie I’ve never felt the need to use one before, I’m honestly not to sure where it goes.
I guess the mentions of abuse and neglect may not sit well with some.
Broken_Peepers 2 points 1y ago
I'm not one to buy in to the use of them anyway, but if you were going to be descriptive about the abuse or neglect, then it would make sense to use a warning.
gabby_skii [OP] 3 points 1y ago
I understand and I think you're right. I'll amend it :)

I agreed there’s not really a place to talk about this stuff. Or a real conversation going on about this. I also feel that this is why largely there is so much problems and unemployment and people who are sheltered and really behind in the blind world. The system is broken but it’s not talked about. I talk about it but not many in the community is interested in talking about it. I guess some of them as hinted by your trigger warning gets pretty triggered when I go deep in to detail about the topic.

I know how it feels for sure. I’ve faced some of this stuff growing up in a very asian household one of the strictest cultures in the background and the least understanding of disabilities. It taught me how to cope and have no leaways it was a we believe in you but we also really don’t. It’s really interesting. I’ve seen blind people and their weaknesses exploited in other ways too as in parents taking their kids social security checks. Or make them feel better by making kids depend on them and always remain that way. But yeah, I agree.

I don’t let anything stop me but because of so many hardships some people give up or don’t really try. I’ve seen it too many times.

I’ve grown up with the mentality of too bad you’re blind work harder and working twice and three times as hard. It could be good then it could be there is also no understanding as you’re suggesting.

I think there’s a lot of shaming of blind people that’s really built in to society that’s not really discussed and some people feel it. The many posts on here about can’t start using a cane because they are self-conscious and would stand out.
