Vision impaired in one eye. Passed interview, rejected later, can't take this! Any useful feedback? Please, anyone. (self.Blind)
submitted by sungalaxy
I know this might be a little long but please can someone out there just provide me with some useful feedback here please?

TL;DR - Applied for Hospitality attendant role, passed the interview. Had medical, medical place was running late and I could not provide a urine sample within their time limit. The employer is not proceeding with my application now, unsure as to whether It may be because of not providing a sample on the day, or possibly because I am also blind in one eye. Also, I honestly do not do drugs, so I know I would have cleared urine test.

A little background, I'm applying for hospitality roles in which I have several years of experience. Ever since I had an accident that left me blind in one eye I feel like this has inhibited my potential to find employment, as I seem to pass the interviews, but not the medicals for hospitality roles? I'm not unfit.
I had a group interview recently where I was picked out of 25 other applicants for a hospitality assistant role. I had a one-on-one interview after and was informed the next day I passed the interview and my application would be progressing further.

I booked the next available medical which was not until the week after, at 3pm. Medical did not start until 3.30pm as they were running late, and you know how it goes everyone at the end of the day isn't exactly happy to be at work. I got this person who was an unbelievable grumpy pain in the a\*\*. I was informed I had to provide a urine sample within a 45 minute time frame as their courier was picking the sample up at 4:15, they close at 5. I was not informed of this prior to booking medical.

I could not provide this sample within the time frame, so I told the medical staff I would be happy to provide a blood sample, they said I could not. I booked the first available medical for the next day at 8am and left.

I sent an email to inform the employer of this to keep them up to date. I did not receive a reply back.

The next day I went back to the medical clinic and they informed me I should not have left yesterday as I still had to see another doctor for a general checkup, they did not tell me this whilst I was booking my next appointment.

I then saw a doctor for a general checkup. After I had the same pain in the a\*\* person this time for the urine test. I couldn't pee at first so I had to wait in the waiting room, and when I could go, I let them know. I took a pee test and this time a different person took a swab from the urine cup and said I was good to go. Are these urine test results instant? Now during this time, I did drink a lot of water and they weren't too happy with this? I think they must have thought I was trying to cheat the test? I was just nervous I wanted to provide the sample as there were time constraints with the employer. I honestly do not do drugs.

So today I was informed by a different member of the potential employer than I was originally dealing with, that they would not be proceeding with my application at this time, and welcome me to ask for feedback on your application?

I have not replied yet, I feel like I'll just get some generic copy and pasted feedback. I'm pretty gutted this is a job that I know I am more than experienced for, and I can't help shake the feeling it's either got something to do with me being blind in one eye, or that somewhere upon completing this medical I have possibly upset the wrong person at the medical clinic, or my potential employer was upset that I did not complete medical in the time frame, and had to go back to complete the next day, which could have potentially incurred them a cost for another appointment which was stated in an email before that I would incur a fee for cancellation or non-attendance. They have not informed me that they have incurred any fees though.

* Do potential employers have a network or access to previous pre-employment medical records from other employers? I'm worried that this is going to continue to f\*\*\* my life up.
* I'm sure some people on here will tell me to let this go, but Its really starting to affect me. This is a recurring cycle for me, it is so unimaginably depressing. I am so keen to get out there and work, and this job is perfect for me and I feel compelled to write an email back explaining the circumstances.
* I love hospitality and tourism and know this is a much better fit for me as there is less risk of me losing my last good eye. I researched this company and practically know more about it than the people that interviewed me.
* How do I let the employer know if the reason why they have chosen not to go ahead with employing me is because of me not completing the medical on the day, had nothing to do with me being unwilling to provide the urine sample or trying to cheat it, but that this was all out of my control because of the medical running late and the time frame?
* Would it sound alright if I inform them that I would be happy to pay for my own medical, and provide them with this? Or that I would even be happy to do some unpaid work experience to show them that I am more than capable for the role? What would a potential employer want to hear in this situation?
* I am prepared to write to the Chief Executive Officer of the company, does this sound like a good idea? If so is anyone have a template example letter I can use to work with?

If there is anyone out there that would like to provide me with any feedback or some awesome written reply hard hitting letter to the employer please let me know?

Thanks for reading any advice greatly appreciated.

First, the process of job searching and interviewing is nervous-making for most people. And not getting that job that feels like the perfect fit can definitely be a punch to the gut. You have my empathy there.

I read through your post a few times, and I’m not sure I’m seeing a connection between not being offered the job and your partial blindness. That’s not to say that type of discrimination doesn’t exist, it certainly does, just that I’m not sure it’s the case from the info you provided. Seems like the mix up with providing the samples and attending the appointment may not have painted you in the best light here. I’m personally not an HR expert, but I’d recommend reaching out to the recruiter you were already in touch with to better explain your end of the situation.

Best of luck!

The being blind and one eye part is completely irrelevant. Unless you told people about it, I bet no one would ever know the difference. You were probably overlooked because you could not follow directions and left prior to being finished with medical appointments. That shows that you cannot follow simple directions, and no employer wants someone that cannot do that.

This is 100% the drug test failure. I wouldn’t even bother crying to contact them against since this looks messy and seems bad.

Unless there’s a vision test your bad eye is not an issue and shouldn’t even be brought up at all

Yeah, I don’t think the blindness has anything to do with it. You sound pretty desperate and your bad attitude comes through. I think that maybe improving those test and complying when asked will be nice and fix up who you are and other ego trip defense issues.

I think leaving and flaking and not doing what you ought here did it for you. Also the attitude of just leaving and stuff isn’t right here.

Companies are super strict about their drug/medical policies and if you can't be at an appointment exactly on time you are not going to be employed with that company. That's what the pre-screening application even states like in the beginning of the paperwork.

Totally TLDR it: that issue you should have went to the place you're being employed and talk to someone in hr to let them know what happened they are incharge of setting appointments up for drug screening. It's considered a refusal if drug test is not given at the exact time it's scheduled.
