My husband is legally blind and has finally lost the last vestiges of vision. So he has decided it’s time to get help interacting with his phone and tablet. Specifically, he wants to start with a good screen reader and voice recorder (for personal and business memos to himself). I know I’ve seen mentions of such things on this sub but I can’t find them now. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I always recommend seeing if your state agency for the blind can help learn. It's easy enough to link some voiceover, for Apple products, resources, but a very high number of people seem to not understand the motion used to turn the rotor, which is a core gesture, and the taps with different numbers of fingers can be a little confusing. If he's using android, it's more complicated because different versions of the OS, different manufacturers and even different lines of phones and tablets can behave completely differently.

Yeah, this issue with Android is part of why I created the post earlier about the changes/improvements of both TB/VO in the last years. Android is just as good if you're on the right phone, but can be near impossible on the wrong one.

There’s an iPhone app called pocket recorder which is very accessible and easy to use

How is this different from Voice Memos on your iPhone?

Have you tried just press record voice memos can’t export as easily and this app is cooler and much easier to use and integrates well to file sharing dropbox or icloud drive. I love just press record.

I think the interface is just a little more immediate and clean, larger controls that are easier to see if you have low vision and easier to find by touch if using voiceover. I just think it’s comfortable to use and the developer had the visually impaired in mind when he designed it

Thank you Synthpopolis!

Is there a comparable app for Samsung that you know of? I saw several but have no idea how they stack up.

The assistant can take notes and should be able to use a selection of note apps to save them in, I use "Keep Notes" on my Pixel which is Google’s note/list app.

Sorry, I’m not sure. I have next to no experience with android

Is just press record on the android side of things? I love it it’s my app of choice. I have to do some recording for a professor of mine I am an older student and have to record math homework. No I am not typing up 30 braille pages hahahaha! I refuse. So I record them and that’s what I use.

I would suggest checking The victor reader stream I am a guy who thought he would always use his phone and the technology on it and nothing else. But having a dedicated device for recording and reading textbooks and papers has been great I find the ability to highlight in text as well as bookmark with voice notes it’s so useful when you want to note multiple things within the body of text or you’re reading a book and you have a thought about a certain passage you can come back to it whenever It’s not for everybody but still give it a look

Has your husband looked at Hadley School for the Blind? They offer lots of great, online, free videos. They have a series of iPhone and Android videos that will teach him the basics of interacting with his phone. DM me if you need help- I teach VoiceOver classes at a different school.

Those need to be updated, particularly in regards to Android, have been quite a number of changes to Talkback in the last couple years that made it much more intuitive and less confused about it's menus/gestures.

Just learning how to use an ipod. Wondering what coarses you offer?

Thank you so much! We’ll look into it tomorrow.

I used to have a voice recorder by Olympus that I loved. Had 3 directional microphones at the top and a voice narrated menu. Looked stylish and modern, good audio quality, and the battery life was good. Simple USB hookup to my pc. Don’t remember the exact model but I really liked the one I got from them. So much so I’ve looked at getting another (the other got stolen or lost somehow in my travels)
bayou_firebaby [OP]2 points1y ago
Thank you. My only problem with Olympus is the proprietary software needed to read back on the computer. If you lose the original registration number (e.g., you move the app to a new computer) you’re up the creek (I speak from experience). And their lite version sucked the last time I saw it (of course I use a Mac and Olympus wasn’t particularly Mac friendly). My husband doesn’t have a computer, just a phone and tablet.

modern Olympuses can just record straight to MP3 or whatever.
TechnicalPragmatist1 points1y ago
No this is untrue they can record to mp3 I had one and pulled off entire mp3 files and just use them. I use to have the ls7 and ls14 myself. Don’t have one now don’t record that much.

Finally!

Yeah, it’s cool they’ve been able to do it for a few years haven’t used it in like a year or two. But yeah.
