Are blind people audiophiles? Do you care about $50,000 headphones? (self.Blind)
submitted by sumant28
Does it matter if music is lossy/lossless. If there’s anything to high fidelity audio equipment I would expect a heavy presence of the blind community but because I’m not seeing much of it I suspect a lot of this equipment is rich posturing

There are blind audiophiles. There are sighted audiophiles. They're a minority in both groups. And if they're a smart blind/sighted audiophile, they're not spending $50k on a pair of freaking headphones. LOL
AllHarlowsEve 7 points 1y ago
Overwhelmingly, blind people are underemployed or unemployed. $50k is more than a lot of us live off for multiple years. I'd love some $300 headphones, but I'm not willing to spend more than the $150 or so I spent on my gaming headset.

Yup ... Exactly.
Simply_Limeade 5 points 1y ago
$50,000? That's some major privilege right there.
Tarnagona 4 points 1y ago
You might be the biggest audiophile around, and not have $50,000 to blow on a pair of headphones. What are they, gold-plated? That would pay off my student loans with money to spare, or buy a sighted person a whole car.

While there may be more audiophiles amongst the blind community, the blind community also tends not to be rich, with higher unemployment rates (triple the national average in Canada, pre-COVID), and those who do work often not making a lot. I doubt many blind audiophiles have the money for such expensive equipment, even if they really, really wanted it.

Well, since you seem to think all us blind people think and feel exactly the same way about things, we better call an emergency meeting so we can all come to a consensus on how to answer your question about whether we like audiophile equipment

Dude that guy responded so weirdly. Youre asking a community of /r/blind whys he acting like you walked up to a blind guy on the street and put him on the spot

Slightly off-topic, but I prefer text-to-speech generated without Human sampling to that of the more "natural" voices. Is this a common thing? I don't se a speech synthesizer as someone reading to me, more as a way of getting data into my head. Does that go some way to explaining it?

There is a certain benefit to higher-end audio gear to a point. But once you decode a quality source and send it to adequate speakers powered by a clean, low distortion amplifier, the returns on the highest end gear are diminishing to a point where it is laughable to spend that much money.

I got a list of priorities and my most expensive headphone to buy is one of sony's wh1000xm for their noise canceling. 50000 bucks is enough to buy myself a godamn house, why would I spend that much in audio equipment?
retrolental_morose 2 points 1y ago
Do you have a house?
ukifrit 3 points 1y ago
No. I just wanted to point the weirdness of OP'S question.
You can actually buy audiophile stuff for a lot less.
retrolental_morose 3 points 1y ago
:) it is an odd one.

Wish my house had only cost 50k though! wondered if you had a secret haha
ukifrit 3 points 1y ago
I have no idea how much a house costs in the US or other countries. You can buy a decent house for 50k bucks in Brazil. I mean 50k reais btw.

I have a Sony WH-1000XM4, which I use for longer travels. The sound and the active noise cancelling works really well, especially, if you are on a plane.
For my way to work, I use Airpods, which I need to replace at some point in the future. At home, I have my 5.1 home theatre system. So, I am not sure, if I would considder myself an audiophile. But I prefer good headphones, if I listen to audio dramas, or if I am travelling for several hours.

I need a link to these headphones so I can laugh at them. Told my hubby about this post and he is googling. Only things he is seeing that expensive are gold with diamonds. At that point you are not paying for tech that will make music sound better, you are paying for bling.
LeBlindGuy 1 points 1y ago
Actually there are some expensive like that
They are called "senheiser HE 1)

but I still prefer to buy a house with the 50k
LOL
TXblindman 2 points 1y ago
Bose is high-quality enough for me.
TechnicalPragmatist 1 points 1y ago
Not every blind person is an audiophile. I think only some of us but not even close to the majority of us.

Hahaha! I don’t think I have the money for 50000 dollar headphones. I do spend a bit on good sound though.

I like comfortable good sounds but don’t know if I’d call myself extremely audiophile enough I guess. The most I’ve spent is like $500 on speakers I think. Definitely 350 for a pair of headset, a 3d senheiser ambio ones that doesn’t work anymore for the longest time the phone doesn’t allow it and now it has broken, it has been a loyal and long lasting pair. I think it needs to be resoldered but yeah. The wire is the matter.

Also I am not super good at audio but I do care enough.
devinprater 1 points 1y ago
Nope. I don't want exact sound, I want the best sound. 3D audio, bass enhancement, all that.
LeBlindGuy 1 points 1y ago
Good headphones don't need do be at the price range of a house
I mean, the senheiser hd 600 is one of the best open back headphones for decades (and is under $500 USD)
But you will need a headphones amp for the hd 600

I am a musician and I regularly work in professional recording studios, and I can tell you that nobody who is actually working on creating the music people listen to are using all the audiophile stuff. Whether you can see or not, it's totally mad.

I use Sennheiser HD 280 or HD 25 if I have to take my own, both of which are under 100 UK pounds.

I would consider myself an audio file as in I would prefer to listen to lossless music or audio files. The most I've spent when I was younger was $3,000 on some cerwin Vega RE's.

As for current headphones that I use I just use the beats studio 3 wireless. They probably have the best bass of any headphone.

I’m not. I like good music sounds, but don’t care if an audiobook or drama is in mp3, flac, or wav.
MostlyBlindGamer 1 points 1y ago
Most people would probably call me an audiophile, but I don't think that has much to do with being visually impaired. I'm not entirely aware of any headphones quite that expensive, but I'm sure you can get a lot of enjoyment out of gear in the high 4 digit range, but you can also really enjoy the low to mid 3 digit range, if you know what to look for and where to focus.
