I can’t believe I just figured this out!!! (self.Blind)

I am extremely behind, but I recently discovered that you can read subtitled Netflix shows with a Braille display!!! Dude, all the anime that just opened up to me! My nerdy heart is dancing. If you’re behind like me, instructions are below:

• Open your preferred streaming service. I tested this with Netflix, but I expect this would also work with Hulu because it’s an apple feature.
• Pick a TV show and swipe to the “Audio and Subtitle Options.”
• Select your preferred language and hit the close button.
• Move through the rotor until you hear “Media Controls.”
• Swipe up until you here Braille. Note that you will be in landscape mode, so I mean up relative to the phone’s orientation.
• Boom! Look at your braille display and you’ll see subtitles.

My Braille reading still needs work, so I have to slowdown the playback speed for me to be able to keep up. The subtitles change as dialogue is spoken automatically. As per usual, some pieces of dialogue don’t fit on the display, so you will have to pan with the thumb keys. I have noticed that there will be a delay if you pan before a fresh set of subtitles displays, but it usually fixes itself if you wait.

Enjoy!

You guys kick ass, I'm a seeing person and I am absolutely impressed with what technology is doing in order to help those of us who are sight challenged. My dad is almost blind, it's been deteriorating for a few decades, I'm going to get him one of these. Thank you!

They're not cheap, and require good sensitivity in the fingers, as well as braille knowledge. While they're awesome and I'd love one, most people don't have $1000 to drop on a device that may or may not work for the person its being bought for. I'd really recommend discussing with his local agency for the blind before purchasing.

Thank you for your response, I will absolutely take that into consideration!

It’s pricey, but I highly recommend the Brailliant from Humanware. I love mine, and connecting it to your devices is pretty seamless.
drDOOM_is_in 3 points 1y ago
Thank you so much, I will absolutely look at that one!

I love my Brailliant and Humanware offers Splitit which uses your credit card available credit to split the payments into 12 making it easier to afford.

I would work on reading braille and understanding it first. It’s a great device and very useful, but if he doesn’t know braille there’s not much he can do with it.
drDOOM_is_in 1 points 1y ago
Yes, thank you. He's been trying braille for years now, it's definitely not coming natural for him. Old dogs and new tricks and all that...
TechnicalPragmatist 2 points 1y ago
Yeah, braille is not for everyone. Especially older people can’t learn it at all or fast. Especially those who lost their sight later. But even people who just was always blind and have never learnt it. It’s a skill and sometimes it takes your fingers which are no longer sensitive anymore.

But that makes sense.

Maybe a braille display isn’t quite a good option and sticking to tts may be the best idea.
drDOOM_is_in 1 points 1y ago
Indeed, indeed. Thanks for the info, it's appreciated.

This is awesome! Gah, I can't wait to get my hands on a Braille display.
SightlessKombat 2 points 1y ago
Pun intended? :)

You know me, always!

That’s super dope! My braille skills are probably akin to those of a first grader, and that might be flattering myself lol. This would give me good reason to practice.

Do you know if those subtitles can be accessed via voiceover or some other speech output as well? Maybe they already are. I have never played with that before either way
QuasarchShooby [OP] 3 points 1y ago
Yes they can. In media controls, there’s an option for speech instead of braille output.
synthpopolis 2 points 1y ago
Awesome! I had seen those options but didn’t quite understand how they worked. Thank you so much. Gives me something to play around with later
QuasarchShooby [OP] 4 points 1y ago
Of course. Feel free to PM me if you have questions. :)
It can be buggy at times, but it’s otherwise a really dope feature.

Oh my God, and I thought that there was no blind/visually impaired person totally loving anime like myself
Also this post is so damn useful thank you
TechnicalPragmatist 2 points 1y ago
Interesting thing you have going here. I think that this is cool and a good use of tech and thinking up ways to do it. I never thought of it. Not something I am super interested in but good thinking.
CloudyBeep 2 points 1y ago
Are you sure this works as well as you think it does? When I pan forward to see the remainder of a subtitle, the following subtitle isn't displayed.
QuasarchShooby [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Hm… yeah I miss a few lines of dialogue sometimes
Eviltechnomonkey 2 points 1y ago
This is so awesome! I'll have to remember this one for my all my fellow nerdy pals. Thank you for sharing this.

Does this only work with Apple TV’s or any smart TV?
QuasarchShooby [OP] 2 points 1y ago
I’m not sure about this working with an Apple TV. I tested it with Netflix on my phone.
