ambutech cane length for someone 6 feet tall? (self.Blind)
submitted by Ir0nhide81
48 or 50 inches?

Also when it asks how many foldable pieces you want is the best option to just get four? What does it mean with more foldable pieces? Is it just a smaller size?

I've been struggling to work this out. I'm 4 feet 9, and working out how tall my cane should be bothers me. Given that we use metric here, and ambutech use inches.

Edit: After reading the rest of the thread and found out you wanted an ID cane, edited my post to be relevant to that.

FYI, if you go down in the combo-box, after the inch measurements are the metric ones. For example, looking at the $1, you'll see that after 60 in there are choices from 70 cm to 150 cm (incrementing by 5 cm).

It depends entirely on reaction and walking speed. If you walk fast and react slow, you might want a cane that goes up to the top of your nose. If you walk slow and react quickly, you might want it up to your chest. Generally, it seems most people are started with a cane that goes up to their armpit. I prefer lips or chin, for my slightly delayed reaction speed.

For you, you're 57 inches so anywhere from 54 to 46 might be applicable to you assuming I'm getting proportions right. I'm a foot taller than you, so 13 inches from the top of my head is obviously a lot different than on you.

If you can measure yourself, it's easy enough to just use a converter online and get the imperial units. It's more of an issue getting the measurements, if you don't have like a cloth measuring tape in your home like I do. 😂

I am 4:11 and use a 53 or 55 inches. There’s no harm to longer I would say 53 is like your 55 though maybe 50 even would work for you.
IcewolfTheBookish 1 points 1y ago
how far does that come up? I'm one of these people who prefer not to have a cane poking up their nose 😂
TechnicalPragmatist 1 points 1y ago
Yeah, it is mouth or nose level. It’s pretty far in front of you so unless you are placing it vertically it will not poke up your nose. But it reaches very far.

lol right? i got the 50 inch last time, going to have to put in a new order for a 52 i think.
Individual-Fan1639 3 points 1y ago
Have you had orientation and mobility training?
Ir0nhide81 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Its an ID cane. Not for mobility.

I just want to know the right length to get for my height.
DHamlinMusic 3 points 1y ago
You might want to edit the post to make this clear, cause people are gonna assume you are talking about mobility canes.
Mamamagpie 3 points 1y ago
In general I think people go with short enough to not get in the way and long enough that people can see it.

It you don’t need to extend it for navigation, figure out with a broom or something how high is comfortable to hold it and add some length to that number.
Individual-Fan1639 2 points 1y ago
What might be comfortable for someone else at your height may not be comfortable for you.
TechnicalPragmatist 1 points 1y ago
If it’s an id cane the hight won’t matter. It’s when you do use it for mobility then is this piece important.

I don't use ambutech but the one I use is 52 in and I am 5 foot 5. It goes up to my breastbone.
TechnicalPragmatist 1 points 1y ago
I have a 55 as my tallest and I am 4:11 I think I had a 59 inch at one point to be funny from the free cane nfb program to be funny hahaha! I just felt silly and ordered one but ended up giving it away I think. I thought it would be fun to own a reeeeeealy long cane for my hight. But yeah. 55s comes up to my mouth and nose pretty much. I like them longer.

I gave it away to be nice and someone needed it more I may reorder a 59 inch though who knows hahaha!
SerenaMoana 1 points 1y ago
yeah i'm only slightly taller than you, and i got the 50 inch when i ordered last time from ambutech. going to have to go order a 52 now though. lol. cause if i have my boots on with heals or anything, that 50 is just too short. lol
River-Song-1986 1 points 1y ago
That's one reason I went with the 52 in as well with so I can wear heels LOL
SerenaMoana 1 points 1y ago
lol yeah. i mean, i don't wear hugely high heals, usually only 2 to 3 inches, but you know, that makes a big difference when you have a cane in your hand. hahaha
River-Song-1986 1 points 1y ago
Right! I typically wear one to one and a half inch heels so not too bad of a difference but still.

I’m not sure for you it’s truly personal preference but for reference I’m 5’2”, my Ambutech canes are 54 inches and come to about my chin. And yes, as far as how many sections to get, the more you choose the smaller it folds up.
TechnicalPragmatist 1 points 1y ago
If it’s an id cane length matters a lot less if you’re going to use it for mobility it will matter more but it’s really purely personal preference. There’s some say collar bone there’s some say oh well having it up to your nose or armpit is too long. Some say well collar bone is to short the longer is better at least arm pit.

I am 4:11 and have it up to my nose or mouth. I have 53 and 55 inch canes. But if you just want it for identification this is not as important.

The more pieces it has the more it fold smaller and smaller.

For a regular cane I use a 64 and am 6 foot 1
SoapyRiley 1 points 1y ago
It’s going to depend entirely on how you want to hold it for an ID cane. Do you want to relax your arm and wrist and hold it straight down your side? Or do you want to hold it more like a hiking stick with your wrist sort of parallel to the ground and your elbow bent? How much bend in your elbow is comfortable?

As far as number of sections: if you are storing your cane while out and have a long but narrow storage space, get fewer sections. If you have a short but fatter storage space, get more sections. The fewer sections the less the cane wobbles in my experience.

I'm 5'5" with a short stride and use a 50in cane. I would think that with your height, you'd probably want something longer. If it's just for ID, maybe not, but if you're ever going to use it for things like probing stairs/curbs, etc. go with a bit longer length. Even for light-duty navigation, you'll be glad you did.
TechnicalPragmatist 1 points 1y ago
I do a lot of mobility getting around. Etc….. I am 4:11 and have a 55 inch at my tallest I have 53 and 55 inch canes mostly. I have an odd 48 inch one from a long time ago
[deleted] 1 points 1y ago
My mobility trainer said that a cane should be the height of your armpit when standing, but for an ID cane, I would go shorter
