Can I learn to ignore a scintillating scotoma? (self.Blind)
submitted by Nonofyourdamnbiscuit
I looked into a laser years ago, and only recently I'm starting to come to terms with the extent of damage inflicted.

When I try to focus on text for instance on a white or dark background, there's a tiny dot of green light pulsating above and a little to the left of what I'm trying to focus on. It makes it super hard to really focus, because there's this 'flashing light' outside my central view.

Is this something that will always be this way, or can my brain learn to ignore it so I can see clearly again?

I mean, the central vision is actually clear, but my brain can't seem to handle that there's something flickering so close to where my focus is trying to stay.

Also, would this show up on a Visual Field Test? I haven't gotten it diagnosed officially yet, but I guess it's hard to spot a blindspot when you don't know it's there. (But now I can't unsee it, and it's really been stressing me out for a long time apparently)

Mine hasn’t. Mine are always black and silver and they would definitely show up on a visual field because the area for me is basically gone except for those flashy squiggles.

How did you get yours? Where is yours located?

Mine are from migraines. I have one that starts in the corner of my left eye and floats across from left to right getting bigger until it disappears and another that surrounds my blind spot from the glaucoma in the upper center of my left eye. That one is permanent, but does vary in size sometimes reaching my central vision. Since when that gets bigger, so does the blind spot, not sure if it’s truly a migraine phenomenon or not.

how long have you had it, and is it something that becomes less bothersome?

It does seem like mine shows up more pronounced at times. Last year I couldn’t watch movies because there would always be this pulsating green light in the corner of my eye no matter what I looked at.

It seems to have lessened in frequency and intensity these days but it still comes back. Especially at night for some reason?

I’ve had the transient one for years now. But of course that one only bothers me for an hour or 2 while it makes it’s way across my visual field. The permanent one has been there since Oct 2020 I think. At first it was so small I could only see it in bright lights. When it’s big, it’s basically all I can see so there’s no ignoring or getting used to it. Today it’s kinda cloudy out and it’s just flickering around the edge of the blind spot so I can ignore it.
