Screen reader suggestions to use for Zoom chat and YouTube live chat? (self.Blind)
submitted by ThisBlindChickReads
It is difficult for me to read the live chat thread during a Zoom meeting and during a live YouTube video. I miss a lot of either what the actual presentation is, or what the community is contributing in the chat.

I am looking for a TTS that is apple compatible and that I can adjust the volume of in contrast to the video feed.

It is more important for me to find a user friendly one for zoom. I feel very self conscious having to be on video 2 inches away from the screen trying to get relevant info from the written chat, while also trying to participate in the meeting.

Thank you!!!

From the sound of it, you'd probably have an easy enough time reading it if you used magnification. Have you have checked zoom under accessibility? That will be in settings on iOS or system preferences on macOS.

I have significant vision loss in my center vision and magnification just doesn't cut it anymore for me unfortunately. I am on a wait list for accessibility tech training (they stopped for covid) so because I can't wait, I am trying to figure out these things on my own.

OK, sorry for misinterpreting. When you say "for Apple" do you mean a Mac computer or an iPhone or iPad? Either way, you'll find the VoiceOver screen reader in the same accessibility options I explained.

No worries! Yes, I meant Mac computer. I appreciate the input! I will start there ... I have tried it before and have to admit it got me frustrated with the clunkiness ... It has been a year so maybe I can be more patient with myself/it now. Thanks again!

Just remember that once voiceover is enabled, you will have to swipe left or write to navigate to what you want. It changes the controls to a very simple interface just like an iPhone using voice over

Ctrl+opt+H will open the VoiceOver help menu. Be sure to check it out. You can also look for the VoiceOver User Guide online.

Voice over is the best one on the mac computer side of things.

Have you thought about learning the shortt cuts for zoom?

Also yeah, it’s pretty hard trying to listen to the presenter and the screen reader all at the same time.
