Any experience with a tactile graphical braille display? (self.Blind)
submitted by nialljg91
Hi All. Just wondering if anyone has had the opportunity to ever test/use a tactile graphical brail display like the one at the below link? I just read about it this morning, and I think it could be very useful for viewing inaccessible visual documents and presentations which are used in education and at work.

I'd love something like this but they tend to be very expensive. I have a 20 character Braille Me and it was $500.

I can't find a price on this device but I wouldn't be surprised if it were over $2000.

Edit: I found a site that lists it at $20,000. It's completely inaccessible to most people.

The link seems to be referring to the first generation of the display, i.e. . Name without the plus.
What are the chances this generation is $19,000 more affordable? 😏
I’m guessing it’s aimed at governmental and educational institutions at that price.

Yeah, which won’t shell out that type of money on something like that.

Unlikely what you are suggesting is a pipe dream.

$2000 yeah $20000 is more like it.

I'd be curious to hear if anyone has ever tried one out as well, because I'd bet that much of the "graphics" displayed would not be easily interpreted tactilely.

How do you mean this makes sense I think though.

Often people just assume that you can make an image tactile and it will automatically be interpreted the same way it is visually.

True that’s a good point though a device like this would have software to try to adapt it best it could but in a lot of ways no machine can do as good of a job of this as a human.

I remember when the Graphiti was still being developed over at the American Printing House for the Blind while I worked there.

They used an early model in combination with some form of special camera setup a few years back to allow staff, students, and visitors at the American Printing House for the Blind and the Kentucky School for the Blind to view a solar eclipse. It was interesting to see people using it. I didn't get a chance to interact with it because I was so busy that day but I watched a video on it.

There is a Lion Club article on the Graphiti, it's development, and some of the experiences it enabled entitled $1.

Not sure on the price of it. I know they wanted to get it to a point where it could be under $5,000 back in 2020. I'm not sure if they have gotten to that point yet or not.

Thanks for your reply. I am going to reach out to the global distributor here in Ireland tomorrow to get an idea is there any demo models in the country which I could experience.
I saw a Facebook comment saying the original version was over 10,000 just after it was released. Hopefully now that there is a second generation, the first may be a little more affordable.

No and not a lot of people or anyone has, I don’t think. It’s extremely uncommon and for now it’s pretty much prototype.
