Any good book on mitochondria for non-– medical professionals (self.Blind)
submitted by Bachelor-pad-72
Hey everyone, I have a optic nerve atrophy
A It is genetic mutation in the opa 1 Jean
I’ve been told it is important to consider mitochondrial function
Does anyone have any good book recommendations for beginners/explanations on mitochondria and their function

I know you said beginner, but what is your highest level of education in biology? Is it high school, an intro course in university or perhaps something else? I ask this as there is a huge spectrum of what beginner means when it comes to cellular biology.

Lastly what book format is ideal for you? Hard-copy, audio book, electronic format such as pdf?

Thanks for the reply, this house me narrow down on what I am looking for, I would preferably read the book in PDF but if I wasn’t able I would see if I could get it on audio
I have a degree so I’m used to this kind of learning so probably a university level intro class kind of book

So I did some thinking and a bit of digging this morning.

Thanks for answering my questions as this really helps. I think the type of book you would be looking for is a textbook on general cell biology with a solid chapter on mitochondria. I am not sure how to link it here but the biochemistry sub looks like a great place to ask about relevant textbook recommendations.

As for format and pricing this can be a bit tricky. With widely established textbooks it is not too hard to find a free pdf copy with the right google search words. I use a subscription program for books called scribd. Users will often upload pdf document versions of textbooks to share with others. A lot of the time, the user will set it so you can download the pdf and then open it with your preferred software. The scribd app also has its on viewer that lets you change the font size and colour but there software will not read the content to you. After the first free month, scribd is roughly fifteen dollars canadian a month.

I am not a part of the biochemistry sub but it looks like a good place if you have specific questions related to the OPA1 gene as well. They may not be familiar with the specific gene or mutation but they would be very familiar with how to use the large scientific databases available online that can provide a lot of detailed insight. This is more advanced stuff that you could pursue at a later time if you want.

Thank you so so much, I really appreciate the work you did and all the different information you have given me, I will definitely write a post in the bio chemistry sub I think I managed to find a good book using some of your great information
Thank you again

Why did they say it’s important to know this information? I’m curious because my son also has Opa1. I’ve been trying to learn everything possible about the gene.
